very strange

on 7/1/2011

I had big expectations for this movie but was let down. Natalie Portman did an excellent job & any praise given to her was well deserved. I wish I could say the same for the movie. It had potential but just seemed to go off in different directions leaving you confused. Some instances you were just left to wonder what actually happened. The sexuality in the movie was just odd. The relationship between the mother & daughter strange. Portman's role comes off as someone that was already suffering from mental illness before she gained the role in the ballet. If it hadn't been for Portman I think this would have been a total flop. Read More

Darren Aronofsky's latest tells the story of a troubled young dancer. Withdrawn and focused on perfection, she channels in her tiny, muscled body the ambition and resentment of her overbearing mother. Natalie Portman gives a stunning performance as Nina, who's won the role of the Swan Queen in an ambitious adaptation of Tchakovsky's Swan Lake ballet. She begins to break down under the strain of a demanding choreographer, who insists she be more passionate, and a controlling mother who wishes her to remain a biddable child. I never expected a story about ballerinas could be so viscerally intense - at once moving and horrific. It's a small, simple film that aims to do just what good psychological horror does, to affect the viewer, to disorient and frighten. Worked for me. Read More

Product Overview

“You can’t tear your eyes away” (Entertainment Weekly) from this “wicked, psychosexual thriller” (Daily Variety) starring ACADEMY AWARD® WINNER Natalie Portman* and directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler ). Portman delivers “the performance of her career” (Vanity Fair ) as Nina, a stunningly talented but dangerously unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her driven artistic director (Vincent Cassel) and the threat posed by a seductive rival dancer (Mila Kunis), Nina’s tenuous grip on reality starts to slip away – plunging her into a waking nightmare.

Note New York City ballet dancer Nina (Natalie Portman) enters into an intense battle of wills with a talented and ambitious new arrival (Mila Kunis) who seems intent on edging her out of the spotlight in this supernatural-flavored psychological thriller from director Darren Aronofsky.

Reviews
ReviewSource New York Post
Review This eye-popping, inspired and often-demented (in a good way) cross between "The Red Shoes" and "All About Eve" channels horror maestros David Cronenberg, Brian De Palma and Dario Argento. It's also something of a companion piece to Aronofsky's "The Wrestler"...Director Aronofsky triumphs in a high-wire act. He skirts ludicrousness by balancing some truly creepy, bloody stuff with some stunningly beautiful ballet sequences enhanced by digital effects...Cassel, Kunis, Hershey and Ryder are all terrific in the year's best-cast movie. The huge triumph, though, is Portman, a prohibitive favorite for the Best Actress Oscar for her dazzling tour-de-force as the skeletal and tortured Nina....Black Swan," which re-purposes (and sometimes remixes) Tchaikovsky's immortal music to truly striking effect, is my favorite film of the year. Go see it already.

Review A wicked, sexy and ultimately devastating study of a young dancer's all-consuming ambition, "Black Swan" serves as a fascinating complement to Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler," trading the grungy world of a broken-down fighter for the more upscale but no less brutal sphere of professional ballet. Centerstage stands Natalie Portman, whose courageous turn lays bare the myriad insecurities genuinely dedicated performers face when testing their limits, revealing shades of the actress never before seen on film.
