| Two years after Nature of Illusion comes Blank for Your Own Message, possibly the Silverman's best solo record -- depending on whether you wish his personal opuses to be in the vein of the Legendary Pink Dots' or not. This one is. The album title is explained by the album cover: a blank canvas, framed and tacked to a wall; an invitation to write your own message on the cover (the inner sleeve offers a few suggestions; this reviewer is particularly partial to the one reading "Swedish Bookshelf Searching for True Romance"). Subtitled "A Zen Opera in Seven Parts," the 43-minute piece contains no vocals, but enough aural drama to warrant the "opera" bit, at least on a metaphorical level. Some of the parts segue, some don't, but they all clearly feel like sequential parts of a single whole. A story is being told, but the plot has been hidden. Phil Knight uses a wide range of sound materials, from beatboxes to cow bells, to paint up an ever-changing landscape. This album has very little to do with the droning stillness of Nature of Illusion. In fact, it is closely related, in style, to the longer sound collages often found on the Dots' albums, namely the "Premonition" tracks. If the music here is less ominous, it still has that certain industrial feel (OK, maybe not in the pastoral seventh part, which could be subtitled "a symphony of cowbells"). More than just another LPD side project for the completist, Blank for Your Own Message is a prime example of the Silverman's sound wizardry and compositional flair. Just don't go in there looking for songs. ~ Fran?ois Couture | |
