Hamilton, one of America''s most recognized chefs, serves up a sharply crafted and unflinchingly honest memoir about the search for meaning and purpose and the people and places that shaped her journey.
BLOOD, BONES AND BUTTER is a gripping memoir of a woman growing up and finding her place in the world. The fact that she became the chef and owner of a successful restaurant (Prune) in New York's East Village is not exactly the point, though it provides a satisfying arena in which the drama of defining professional struggles can be played out. And, practically speaking, it offers a popular niche in which this moving book can land and hopefully be discovered. Gabrielle Hamilton has written a convincing testament to the fact that having something you care passionately about--even in a vague and undefined way--often presents the best chance for a lost soul to emerge from the mire of despair, drugs, and underachievement. Her honesty and the clarity of her writing will captivate non-foodies as well as those who want the inside goods on the food world.

Prune, Gabrielle Hamilton’s restaurant on New York’s Lower East Side, but now that I’ve read Hamilton’s memoir, I want to spend all my afternoons lounging over a late lunch at Prune’s miniscule bar—because if the food is anywhere near as good as the writing in this book, the food must be very, very good indeed. The subtitle of Blood, Bones & Butter is “the inadvertent education of a reluctant chef,” and indeed, as Hamilton makes abundantly clear, her kitchen education came the hard way: in hardscrabble restaurants working the grill, slinging drinks as an underage cocktail waitress, managing the kitchen at a kids’ summer camp, pulling double shifts as a catering the full review

"Hamilton can write....BLOOD, BONES AND BUTTER traces nearly all of Hamilton's life and career....It's a story of hungers specific and vague, conquered and unappeasable, and what it lacks in makes up for in the shimmer of Hamilton's best writing." - Frank Bruni 03/13/2011
