Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)is among my major manga favorites more so also because with everything that is coming out it is more accessible. I am a recent Otaku so is nice to look forward to a series that you do not feel intimidated to catch up with an extensive backlog. It is unfortunate that as an anime Blue Exorcist has ended but this a series with a major push from Viz manga. You can see why it may not be the most original premise but is character design and storyline is different for a shonen manga. It is cool, a kind of cool that reminds me of a blend of Bleach and Soul Eater in its style. I love manga that blends a little bit of east and west. I like when Japan gives its take on Christianity. Biblical topics and references are not averted and enriches the feel. Buddhist lore is also explored so I really like the background of it. Let me say that religion is not at the center of the story the. This is a sometimes action packed demon fighting series with coming of age teenagers at its center.Kato often follows shonen manga formula only to kind of give you a wink and in a subtle manner upend it in a few pages. Awesome cover, story this volume is good but it is just starting to pick up steam and are close to a climax for this arch. The bonus material is really good this volume. The art quality for these volumes has not decreased and in some ways like the story is really coming in its own. The shift to Bon and his back story and the paralell of Bon's relationship with his father and what goes on with Rin and by extension Yukio is just a good plot better than previous archs. The subplot of Shiemi and Izumi's relationship that play out bigger in th upcoming issues makes me think I will love the direction of this manga.
