Professional Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews 8 of 10
[Action] Exciting formulaic war propaganda sea story that pays homage to the American Merchant Marines and their role during World War II. Lloyd Bacon ("42nd Street"/"The French Line") was director and shot the entire film on the Warner sound stage. It has brilliant special effects, a tight pace, is gritty and has the usual ethnic mix (with Sam Levene as the guy from Brooklyn, Alan Hale as the spunky comical Irishman and Dane Clark as the tough Polish family value man)...It's also worth noting that Don Siegel, future gifted director, did the excellent montage scenes. - Dennis Schwartz

Chicago Sun-Times 10 of 10
[Maltese] Among the movies we not only love but treasure, ''The Maltese Falcon'' stands as a great divide...To describe the plot in a linear and logical fashion is almost impossible. That doesn't matter. The movie is essentially a series of conversations punctuated by brief, violent interludes. It's all style. It isn't violence or chases, but the way the actors look, move, speak and embody their characters. Under the style is attitude: Hard men, in a hard season, in a society emerging from Depression and heading for war, are motivated by greed and capable of murder. - Roger Ebert
