Book of Eli would be better as a one-man drama
Denzel Washington makes this mediocre movie into a good movie. His character in “Book of Eli” could do a one-man drama and it would be as good as this movie is. Gary Oldman is OK too, but his character is stereotypical. (He’s a better actor than this role allows.) The other actors do an adequate job. It was interesting to watch once, but I wouldn’t watch it again. It’s another post-apocalyptic storyline; society is degraded to the point of people eating human flesh (although this is never portrayed). Denzel’s character is carrying a valuable book on a journey to the sea (the western coast of the U.S.). A young woman tags along with him and in the end provides assistance. Along the way, he fights off bad guys (the chief of them is Gary Oldman’s character, of course). There is a lot of violence, blowing up things and shooting people. There is also some horrible sexual violence, viewed from a distance – gang rape and murder. So beware of that! I won’t say what the valuable book is, but you can probably guess. The plot and ending are somewhat predictable, and the characters are more flat than rounded – other than Denzel’s. Again, he could pull this off as a one-man stage drama (modified of course) and it would be worth watching. Because of the violence and sexual violence, you might want to avoid this movie. Knowing in advance to expect that, if you choose to watch it, Denzel’s performance is good.
