	Singer-songwriter Alejandro Escavedo has always thrived on mixing genres and textures, but that process and Escavedo's own development as an artist reach an apotheosis on 2006's BOXING MIRROR. Folding rock, country, pop, Latin elements, and other styles into his unique aesthetic, Escavedo, with help from producer John Cale, has made an album of remarkable power and beauty. Occasionally coming across as a strange, countrified acoustic version of synth-punk, the album's musical landscape is only part of its appeal. Escavedo has reached deep to craft the moody, reflective, sometimes harrowing compositions here, and with soul-searching tunes like "Arizona" and "Notes on Air," BOXING MIRROR becomes much more than a pop album: it is a riveting musical journey of self.

Artist Overview

Born in San Francisco into the well-known musical Escovedo family (brother Coke Escovedo was in Santana, and his niece is 1980s pop star Sheila E), Alejandro Escovedo was an integral part of the original alternative country scene as a member of the pioneering Rank and File and leader of the True Believers. His solo career, commencing with 1992's Gravity, has made him a beloved cult figure on the alt-country scene; he was named Artist of the Decade by No Depression magazine in 1999. After he became seriously ill with Hepatitis C, a 2003 tribute album helped pay his medical bills.
