Praise
"Gorgeously illustrated with a cartoony but expressive style, with a richly detailed story and empathetically conflicted hero, Berry's debut should be a hit." (starred review)
"[Berry] writes in a darkly poetic vein about love and betrayal, deceit and despair, in a plot so complex it would give Raymond Chandler a headache....The lines of her drawings are sharp and penetrating, the monochromatic colors diluted in tearful washes of blues and blacks...."
"The graphic novel is treated as film noir in this deftly written, visually stunning debut....suggest[ing] that the graphic novel would have been the ideal medium for Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler...." (starred review)
"Illustrated with rich, dark, broody ink and watercolor drawings in an oversize format, BRITTEN AND BRULIGHTLY...is a slender tour de force."
"[W]hat makes Berry's graphic novel linger long and move into a remarkable strata is how it understands the terrible price and awful sense of loneliness that comes to those seeking salvation when there is none to find."
From the Publisher
Annotation Using a particularly unsettling sense of perspective and a smudgy palette of watery grays and bruised blues and greens, Hannah Berry introduces us to Fernández Britten. A "private researcher" (as distinct from a private investigator), Britten has a hard time getting out of bed. Years in his line of work--delivering horrible information to people about what the ones they love and hate have done and digging up secrets best kept buried--have left Britten with dark circles under his eyes and a heavy heart. When a young woman asks Britten and his partner Brülightly (who, in a conceit that reminds us that this is as much a graphic novel as a detective story, is literally a tea bag that hangs out in Britten's pocket) to unearth the truth about her fiancé's death, Britten hopes that he will be able to shed some light on things. But as is often the case in noir tales, the world persists in its harsh brutality.
Editors Note Private detective Britten and his unconventional partner, Brülightly, take on the mysterious death of Berni Kudos, and although the official verdict is suicide, Berni's fiancée is convinced that the reality is something more sinister. Original.
Editors Note 2 "Private detective Fernâandez Britten is an old hand at confirming the dark suspicions of jealous lovers and exposing ugly truths of all varieties. Battered by years of bearing ill tidings, he clings to the hope of revealing, just once, a truth that will do some good in the world. It is a redemption that has long eluded him. Then Britten and his unconventional partner, Brèulightly, take on the mysterious death of Berni Kudos. The official verdict is suicide, but Berni's fiancâee is convinced that the reality is something more sinister. Blackmail, revenge, murder: each new revelation stirs up the muddy waters of painful family secrets, and each fresh twist takes the partners further from Britten's longed-for salvation. Doing good in the world, he discovers, may have more to do with silence than truth.
