Scanning only for an amateur6/5/2009
I purchased the unit intending to replace a lot of machinery in my office: printer, copier, scanner & fax machine. I work in graphics so scanning is crucial to my work. The device's scanning is on amateur -- to scan with a preview using the ADF you must feed the document twice -- it doesn't retain the preview in memory! And, if you scan from the ADF and select to scan as grayscale image, no matter what, it produces an image that is not grayscale but is Index Color which is useless for print graphics work. I have sent nearly two hours on the phone with their level 5 tech support who in the end confirmed that I was correct in these issues and was how the machine was made to work! They even warned me that if I were to upgrade to a newer driver/software package, then all scanning, not just from the ADF (from flatbed too which is now okay) would be Index color even if set to grayscale! I can't begin to understand why anyone would want or expect a machine to perform in this matter.
Works Like a Dream8/20/2008
Printing, scanning to PDF, whatever. This thing works beautifully. My desktop and my wife's laptop are both able to do everything with this device, and do it wirelessly. All electronics should work this carefree & reliably.
This Multi Function Printer has everything I needed (Printer, Scanner, Fax, Copier + Duplex and wireless capabilities). It was very easy to set up and I particularly like that I can use my home phone line to send and receive faxes (you need to follow the instructions to set it up this way). The wireless capability is also a must have for me, and it works flawlessly. I had to set up mine manually, but it was not difficult to do. I followed the directions and was able to set it up just fine. The instructions are well written and I had no trouble at all. This is a great printer either for office or home use. I use mine at home and I absolutely love all the functions and capabilities it has. This MFC printer is well worth the price.
A Lot of Bang for the Buck!!9/25/2007
Really can't beat this printer for value/performance. Network scan to PDF - duplexed for about $500 !!! I have had several Brother printers over the years, and am always impressed with the value and featureset of the products. Used with Macs for the majority of work. (had, still use a MFC-8840DN but our office expanded and wanted the same functionality...the 8870 performs the task. Recommended.
