Review Had Israeli director Eytan Fox's new film, about a passionate affair between two men on opposite sides of the Israeli-Arab conflict, been released in the early 1970s (when I was the same age as its twentysomething hipsters and living in Tel Aviv), the movie would have attracted a smattering of furtive admirers in the peace movement and the tightly closeted gay community. Almost everyone else in what was then a homophobic society, riddled with anti-Arab sentiment after the Six Day War (and on the cusp of the Yom Kippur War), would have thrown rotten tomatoes...Today, The Bubble--which has fairly explicit scenes of gay sex between a young Jew and a Palestinian from the occupied territories--is a local hit that's also proudly flagged on the New York Israel Consul's website...About forbidden love he may be a hopeless romantic, but Fox also has the hopeless romantic's propensity for dystopia when idealism fails. Given the upbeat, tender rhythms of the movie's love story, the climax--a cry of bottomless despair--comes as a profound shock. It's meant to, and though the ending is touched by the goofy absurdities of melodrama, Fox's mix-and-match sampling of apparently incompatible genres nails the nervous blend of vitality and desperation that is Israel today.

Review Israeli director Eytan Fox's last film, the surprise hit Walk on Water, critiqued its homeland's suffocating masculinity by having its Mossad-agent protagonist suffer from a tear-duct deficiency. His follow-up The Bubble presents star-crossed love between an Israeli and a Palestinian. Clearly Fox is out to piss off fundamentalists and those allergic to hambone allegory in one fell swoop...The Bubble opens with a checkpoint tragedy that acts almost as a short film. Fox follows two of its participants--sensitive music store clerk Ohad Knoller, who unwillingly pulls National Guard duty on the weekends, and equally sensitive Palestinian Yousef Sweid--back to Tel Aviv, where the two proceed to get it on. Knoller is part of the new generation of young, hedonistic, progressively minded Israelis, and he and his roommates embrace Sweid, giving him a fake Israeli-sounding name and pouring their beliefs into fomenting a "Rave for Peace"--a beach party for young Israelis and Palestinians...Fox is a slick filmmaker whose films have struck a nerve back home...But there's an intelligence brewing underneath The Bubble, one that's more nuanced than its characters'--or, for that matter, the entire grim third act. Flawed though it is, at least the film lets Knoller and Sweid become three-dimensional characters, not bold representations of Israel and Palestine.

Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News ...it's the attention to minor details that makes [Fox's] work so memorable.
