Customer Reviews of Buffalo LS-WX2.0TL/R1 LinkStation Duo 2TB Dual-Drive Reliable Shared Storage (NAS)
good home server or backup storage6/16/2013
I bought this device to use as a basic home server for my Mac, Windows and Linux machines. It works great and is completely reliable. I also use Buffalo at work for server backup storage using SMB or FTP. It comes with two 1TB hard drives. If you configure as raid0 that will give you 2TB of storage. By default it will configure as raid1 (mirroring) to prevent you from loosing data in the event of a hard drive failure. If you use the raid1 option you will have 1TB of storage. I've tried several other NAS devices and Buffalo or Synology are my favorite. Synology has a lot more features but is more expensive. Buffalo is reliable and cheap.
This unit has two 1 TB drives, the total capacity will depend on whether you want any redundancy of your data, which is highly recommended in the the event a drive fails.
Great and easy to use. Would buy more products as they roll em out. Only annoying thing is the tcp error it gives in settings, but all the features work great. SPECS ARE NOT WRONG!!! 2 1 TB DRIVE. IS 2TB
Could be better3/28/2012
Not a bad storage device but the software that comes with this not very good. I would not use any of them. Also the web interface for this is also not very good. Very slow and always refreshing. If I had to make a choice now I would probably look into a different nas solution.
Easy to install, already comes with drives. Which, at this price point is plenty attractive enough. Interface is a bit slow to load sometimes but file copies are quick enough for my needs. Also, has FTP server or some web based file access through a web browser, so that's an added bonus.
fantastic, a bargain3/24/2011
unbelievable how much storage prices have come down over the years. RAID for the home now commonplace thanks to products like this. very easy setup, running 1TB mirrored. am getting another.
Capacity In System Specs Misleading3/12/2011
Drive capacity: 2TB.... Number of Drives: 2.... Total Capacity: 2TB, I assumed, incorrectly, set up RIAD 1 out of the box. That's what I get for not reading through all the reviews where another reviewer stated the 1TB drive size. Gave it one star only due to the misleading Specs. I'm sure it will work fine.
Great for it's price12/30/2010
Great product, it's exactly what it claims to be. I've had no problems with it after about a month of use. I keep it in my basement connected to my wireless router and connecting to it over a N connection it's as fast as a hard drive in an enclosure, I've had no trouble watch DVDs images to it over wifi. Reformated to Raid1 faster than I expected it to. The web interface that is used to control the unit is pretty slow, but I don't think it's much of a flaw since it's something you only need to use for setup or reconfiguration. Since it's in my basement I can't say as to how loud it is when in use, but it doesn't seem loud when I'm in the basement doing other stuff. Works great with TimeMachine for Mac too. Haven't tried using the MediaCenter or Bittorrent functionality.
Great little box12/16/2010
Bought to be a media server in my home. 15 minutes after unpacking, I was copying files to it. Couldn't be easier. So far, it has worked flawlessly for my application. I have it mounted to a wall in my wiring closet. Not a bad place to put it considering how loud the fan is. That is my only complaint. If you buy this unit, you can't go wrong.
Worried About Installing12/13/2010
I purchased this unit after checking many NAS units. Many of the reviewers mentioned that adding NAS is not a beginner project. I don't consider myself a beginner, but anytime you run into computer problems, it can be a daunting task to figure out the cause. I went ahead and ordered the unit. Upon receipt I took a good look at the unit to see how it was made and get a good view of the way it was put together. I immediately discovered that one of the hard drives couldn't be removed because the unit had been dropped during shipping with such force that several of the guide tabs aligning the hard drives into the case had been bent over which caused the second hard drive to be unremoveable. I could bend the tabs back to true, but have not. This unit comes with two 1 TB HDD's. I went ahead and installed the unit without incident. The unit is shared by five computers, four with XP and one Vista. All connected easily with the NAS. I easily transferred my data wirelessly and quickly. The unit is mounted in a part of the house where the utilities come in and right next to my modem, but it is absolutely quiet and could be mounted on a desk without problem. It is heavy, but small in size. The instruction manual is a PDF which should be downloaded to desk for reference. Then a web style program is used to change settings on the unit. Doesn't take much to get familiar with the web controls. The unit shows up as another drive. I have a RAID 1 configuration for dual data redundancy, which cuts your capacity in half, but in my instance there is more than enough data capacity. If you are somewhat familiar with computer and peripheral set ups, this proves to be fairly easy to set up and use, almost plug and play. For me, being able to get my data easily from any computer on my network is the main reason for my purchase. I have no plans to use the Internet function. A very nice product.
Received item literally in 28hrs from ordering. Only complaint regarding this item is the directions could be alot easier to follow for the novice user. Still can't get email feature to work. Otherwise set up was easy so far happy with purchase. Price was great.
Bad experience with NovaStor Backup software10/10/2010
This is an add-on to previous review. Need to restore a file has shown the Nova Backup softweare as anything but intuitive and almost impossible to figure out what its doing and set up a restore. The drive functions great, but has lost its attractiveness as a backup device.
Competent and reliable9/25/2010
Delivered quickly by Buy.com. Installation and set up was quick and easy, tho it did not automatically map the shared folder to the computers on the network, as did the iomega Home Media Network HD it replaces. By my test it appears to reboot and install itself after a power failure--unlike the iomega which needed to be manually reset (which I learned only after a year of contacts with their tech assistance). The backup software seems to be OK and managable--again unlike the EMC Retrospect that came with the iomega, which kept piling up new backups without allowing deletion of old ones. Overall, a serviceable product--all one wants from a network backup drive. Haven't needed to contact tech assistance, so can't comment on that.
DLNA server does not support .mkv files!9/9/2010
I bought this to build a media server for my home. I have lot of movies in .mkv format and I came to find out that built in DLNA server does not support .mkv files!!!
Bought two, one DOA, quick RMA, good service3/4/2010
Plugged the first one in straight out of the box and it was up and running immediately. Web interface is good. Has SMTP alert and timed reporting on RAID which is nice, so it emails me if problems come up and does a detailed status report whenever you schedule it. Overall performance seems good via gigabit network connection. The second unit had a RAID setup error. Called BuffaloTech support and was on with them for no more than twenty minutes (five of which was holding) before it was determined a replacement was needed. Something in the RAID software seemed bad. Their RMA process was painless, but they could not overnight a unit to me--takes 24 hours to process the RMA. All in all, I'm satisfied. DOAs happen. Their tech support was available, professional and competent. I'd buy another as long as these two stay alive for a reasonable time.
