Joe Haldeman
Born in Oklahoma, Joe Haldeman grew up in a variety of places, ranging from Alaska to Puerto Rico. He earned a B.S. in astronomy at the University of Maryland in 1967. He was drafted into the Vietnam War that same year, and fought as a combat engineer. After he was discharged with a Purple Heart, he returned to school for graduate study but never finished his degree. He dropped out to write, and his first story, "Out of Phase," was published in 1969. Much of Haldeman's writing is based in some way on his experiences in the war, and his first novel, WAR YEAR (1972), was a way to address this issue. In 1975, THE FOREVER WAR was published to great acclaim, winning the Hugo and Nebula awards. That same year, he earned an M.F.A. in English from the Iowa Writers workshop. Haldeman has taught at various universities, including M.I.T., in addition to teaching classical guitar and coaching a fencing team. He has written numerous poems and short stories, which include award winners like "Tricentennial" (1976), "The Hemingway Hoax" (1990), "Graves" (1992) and "None So Blind" (1994). In addition to his novels, each volume of the Worlds trilogy was nominated for a Locus Magazine Reader's Poll Award. In 1997, Haldeman wrote a successful follow-up to FOREVER WAR, called FOREVER PEACE, which was also a multiple award winner.
Praise
"...[S]moothly written entertainment."
"...[A] classic SF thriller with unexpected and touching human elements....With plot twists worthy of Raymond Chandler and memorable Heinlein-esque aliens, CAMOUFLAGE is a suspenseful, imaginative read sure to please."
From the Publisher
Annotation This near-future SF thriller from the author of THE FOREVER WAR concerns an undersea object with decidedly unearthly origins. When an ex-admiral and a marine biologist raise a mysterious device seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, it attracts the attention of two shape-changing aliens--one a ruthless, highly trained killer--who have separately roamed the Earth for centuries.
Editors Note An unidentified artifact, found seven miles below the surface of the sea, stumps the scientists examining it but calls out to the two immortal creatures who have wandered the Earth for centuries, never crossing paths until now. Reprint.
