First of all, this thing came out of the box and just installed the way the instructions said - no issues. Wireless connectivity instantly (I run a LinkSys Wireless N-Router). Print quality is great with text and beyond stunning for photos - unparalled. Got rid of an HP that was older, not wireless and was average on photos. I do have one serious negative comment that I hope Canon reads. The printer almost always takes forever to spit out the first print if its been idle a bit. Hairpulling annoying, but not enough to not get it. The software to use it is above average, but not the best. Bothers me though, because my Canon from 10 years ago did the same thing. Anyway, the price at Buy.com was great, delivery immediate and solid printing performance.
Another Great Product From Canon4/4/2009
Canon didn't let me down! My Canon i960 printed great pictures and so does the MP980. It's easy to use and was a snap to setup...even the wireless...contrary to some other reviews I had read. The only improvement I think that could be made is faxing capability.
Great quality photos, good speed printing, but a little slow to start in the print mode. Much less noise than most printers I have owned. Scanner is fast and easy, and copier works great as well. The door opens by itself when start to print. I'm not sure of the ink consumption, but the main reason I bought was the ink was less than many other machines. Print quality is as good as store developing. Set up was easy. I hooked up my main computer by USB, and networked my wireless laptop with no problem through the normal network fashion. I am told by my IT department that would be a faster reaction time from the time you hit the print key. I do not intend to use the bluetooth portion, but who knows down the road. Graet machine so far!
Seems like a great printer but...I have a network with lots of devices, wired and wireless, never much a problem setting up any of them but this one I have spent around 2 hours per evening for a week on, finally got it to work hardwired to the access point. Manual obviously written in foreign language and poorly translated, difficult to follow. Have followed instructions to the letter until results don't fit any of the recommended paths in the manual anymore. Incredibly, this requires that I restart my Mac after installing the software. Now that it's connected prints look good, I'll give it a rest for a few days and then try wireless again. My recommendation is stay away from this printer.
A lot of bells and whistles for reasonable money
Fantastic multifunction printer12/21/2008
This is the best printer I've bought in a long time -- I replaced two printers and a scanner with this one product and am very happy with the overall performance. Photo prints are fast, crisp and color accuracy is very good. Pros: + Easy setup and compact footprint for a multifunction product + Wireless was relatively straightforward and easy to setup (on XP) + 3.5" display is large and bright + Photo prints look great, easy to print from memory card and make adjustments, crop, etc. directly through the printer + Scans done directly from the printer are very fast (output is a bit light but can be corrected in Photoshop); however, scans from the Photoshop (or comparable software) plugin can be painfully slow. + Color and B&W photocopying is fast and output is very good. + Printing on specialty photo paper or matte art paper -- output is excellent, among the best I've seen from a home multifunction printer -- and color accuracy is excellent. As a photographer, I print a lot of my own work and am very happy with the output from this printer. Cons: - Canon software is a bit lame -- I wish they would make more features compatible with products like Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. The user interface is not intuitive and lacks consistency -- condense everything into one program instead of having myriad small programs! - Printer seems to pause / process for a little while before beginning to print or scan (then is very fast) - Not all software programs will recognize the rear paper tray (e.g., Microsoft Word) - Scroll wheel seems a bit flimsy Overall I highly recommend this printer for its speed, ease of setup and use, and excellent output.
Scans slides & Prints beautiful photos quickly12/16/2008
I purchased this printer because I have been happy with Canon in the past, but needed a scanner that would convert our family slides to digital. Set-up was simple, although I haven't attempted wireless yet. I really like the dual paper feeds. Although the slide guide isn't perfect, it gets the job done. Scanned about 250 slides so far. It only scans 4 at a time, and takes about 5 minutes per set. Have printed beautiful photos from computer that rival those printed at a photo store. The Canon MP980 is a bit pricy, but I'm very satisfied overall.
