Just an OK Movie

on 3/31/2012

I'll admit Captain America had an interesting premise but the delivery was pretty average. There were a lot of explosions and fight scenes and not enough back story or even tension within the characters. Schmidt wanted world domination. That's it. He was too simple. Rogers was too straight up of a good guy to have much depth. And agent Peggy Clark was not very interesting either. Read More

Editors Note
Note Meek U.S. Army soldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) takes part in an experimental military program that infuses him with super-human powers, and uses his newfound strength to battle the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) in this comic-book adventure from director Joe Johnston (THE WOLFMAN, THE ROCKETEER). Tommy Lee Jones, Neal McDonough, and Stanley Tucci co-star in a film written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley (who previously collaborated on THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE).
Reviews
Chicago Sun-Times 3 stars out of 4 -- "[H]ere is a real movie....It has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film." 07/27/2011
Los Angeles Times "Evans has gone the Marvel route before....[T]his part brings out an appealing earnestness and humility in the actor that is certainly not business as usual in the comic book superhero genre." 07/22/2011
Box Office 4 stars out of 5 -- "Joe Johnston shrink-wraps Americana in the super-powered physique of star Chris Evans and serviceably approximates a brisk, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK-esque sense of adventure..." 07/20/2011
USA Today "As the titular comic book character, Chris Evans has an appealing, earnest quality....Evans provides just the right human anchor to the flash and dazzle of director Joe Johnston's production." 07/22/2011
Washington Post 3 stars out of 4 -- "[I]t's a terrific movie....[T]he World War II-era drama returns the form to its classic roots..." 07/21/2011
Rolling Stone "Evans makes a hell of an MVP." 08/04/2011
Entertainment Weekly "[T]he film reaches back to the seed of all superhero fantasy: the myth of the 98-pound weakling transfigured....Evans is an appealing actor..." -- Grade: B 08/05/2011
Total Film 3 stars out of 5 -- "[Johnston] manages to pull out the stops for the finale: an explosive confrontation above the clouds that then quiets down for a touching farewell." 09/01/2011
Sight and Sound "Director Joe Johnston went the retro route in the underrated THE ROCKETEER, and again catches the 1940s tone well: the film finds an acceptable rationale for the Captain American persona..." 10/01/2011
