Annotation:
Elizabeth Goodman talked to her subject's family, friends, and colleagues, but she did not get the artist's cooperation for this biographic efforts. The notoriously unstable Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, had nothing to do with Goodman's book. The author, however, digs persistently past Marshall's onstage breakdowns into her nomadic childhood across the south, the legacy of schizophrenia and addiction in her family, and her quicksilver rise to indie stardom. Clearly a fan, Goodman--who without Marshall's support perhaps had nothing to lose--does not turn away from asking some tough questions about this talented but troubled musician.

Praise
"Goodman's respect for Marshall's music is evident, but it's her objectivity when faced with reporting some of the singer's less than admirable traits that make this a thoroughly enjoyable read."
