Review An artful, quietly moving hybrid of documentary and narrative cinema, The Cave of the Yellow Dog transports you to the windswept, grassy plains of Mongolia, where a nomadic family struggles to hold onto their ancient traditions in the face of encroaching modernity. Using a real family instead of actors, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Byambasuren Davaa (The Story of the Weeping Camel) focuses on the particulars of everyday life in this ethnographic fable...Although elements of contemporary life are present throughout, there's a timeless quality to Davaa's film, particularly when Nansaa finds refuge with the wizened peasant woman who gently proffers invaluable life lessons to the little girl...the breathtaking visuals and low-key charm sweetly compensate for any lulls in The Cave of the Yellow Dog, winner of the Palm Dog at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
