Projecting the whiskey-soaked desperation of the Pogues on to an American south canvas, the North Carolina-based Spider Bags play country-spiked garage rock that calls to mind images of pick-up trucks in front yards, crushed beer cans, and cigarette-strewn porches. Frontman and songwriter Dan McGee isn't bashful about his weaknesses for booze, women, and rock & roll, as rave-ups such as "Blood For You," "Waking Up Drunk," and "The Bottle" so clearly attest. Yet there are quiet, more poignant moments here too that make CELEBRATION OF HUNGER as much about Sunday morning as Saturday night.
