Performance

Although the cd is as fantastic as the movie, I am disappointed in the addition of three songs. Queen Latifah's cover of Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming and Anastacia's Love Is A Crime should never have been included on this cd. The entire cd, like the movie, is jazz/blues based. These two songs, 'inspired by the movie' are rap, and not very good rap at that. I don't know what the producer's were thinking of when they included these songs, and while I enjoyed the movie so much so that I've alread seen it twice, I don't know if I'll listen to the cd as much because of the rap inclusions. If space was needed to be filled, they could have added more of Danny Elfman's musical arrangements.

Listening to this CD was as fun as watching the movie. In the case of the CD, it's nice to hear that it holds up as an independent entity away from the film. In some cases (especially Queen Latifah's "Mama" song) I found listening to the CD more enjoyable than watching the performance in the movie. It's also nice to have the recording of "Class" even though it was unfortunately cut from the film. The two songs "inspired" by Chicago are ok, but they don't really belong on this CD. Thanks to the producers for including a couple of Danny Elfman's wonderful arrangements as well. The overall quality of the CD seems a little bit tinny to me, but not so much as to be distracting.
