A young white girl named Patricia and her two best friends, a pair of African-American brothers named Stewart and Winston, perform a secret ceremony that makes them brothers and sister. After Patricia's grandmother dies, she adopts the boy's grandmother, Miss Eula, as her own. When the trio hears Miss Eula wishing for a beautiful hat to wear on Easter, they set out to raise money in order to buy the hat for her. Pencil-and-wash illustrations accompany the text. This story is based on the author's own childhood memories.
