When the difficult star of the reality television show "Expedition Survival" disappears while filming an episode in the Florida Everglades using animals from the wildlife refuge run by Wahoo Cray''s family, Wahoo and classmate Tuna Gordon set out to find him while avoiding Tuna''s gun-happy father.
Annotation:
Carl Hiaasen, known for his zany plots, has produced another wacky middle grade novel with CHOMP. Raised by a talented wild animal wrangler, Wahoo Cray is used to spending time with monkeys, gators, snakes, and other dangerous creatures. When his father is hired to consult on a reality show called "Expedition Survival!," their lives get much more complicated. Not only is the star, Derek Badger, obsessed with his own press, but he actually disappears on set. At the same time, Wahoo is trying to keep his dad from doing something stupid, he has to help Tina, a classmate who's father is abusive. When absolutely everything goes wrong on the set in the Everglades, Wahoo has to find a way to keep them all alive. Carl Hiaasen is the author of numerous popular adult mysteries, as well as Newbery Honor-winner FLUSH.

Praise

"Humorous adventure tales just don't get any more wacked...or fun to read than this." (starred review) 12/01/2011

"The author manages to sustain a comedic mood with the inept survivalist and the budding romance between two fish-named youngsters while simultaneously developing an underlying sense of tension. Mystery, action, humor, and exotic animals and settings, all tied together by a writer with an exceptional grasp of language, makes this a sure hit with any mystery-loving readers."
