Author Bio
Tomi Ungerer
Tomi Ungerer studied briefly at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg. In 1956, he immigrated to the United States, where he began his career as an illustrator and author of picture books. His first book, THE MELLOPS GO FLYING, appeared in 1957. Ungerer has also illustrated the work of Jeff Brown, William Cole, and Mary Stolz. In addition to his work as an author/illustrator, he is well known for his political cartoons and poster art. In 1998 Ungerer was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his lifetime achievement as an illustrator of children's books.
