Editor's NoteThis vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical run, through frequent holiday broadcasts that turned its schoolyard "triple-dog" dares, family neuroses, and childhood indignities into a Yuletide tradition.

Customer Reviews of Christmas Story
This is one of my favorite Christmas movies. The plot is great and the acting was pretty good. It is one of those movies that makes me laugh each time I see it. Overall I would say that this has to be one of my favorite Christmas movies, and I look forward to watching it every year.
New Family Classic--"Christmas Story"1/5/2011
I read the book by Jean Shepherd "In God We Trust--All Others Pay Cash" for my book group (I also live in Indiana where the book takes place). My son-in-law told me that his family watches this movie every Christmas & it is based on this book! I had never heard of it before--maybe because I am a Calif. native & it is an older book & movie. But the book is wonderful--a sort of combo of David Sedaris, Garrison Keillor & James Thurber & the movie does not disappoint w/its rendition of life for a young boy in Holden, Indiana. Laugh out loud moments, youthful insights & universal emotions American children from middle-class families who celebrate Christmas & dream the "impossible dream" of that gift that seems unattainable yet so necessary for our happiness & even for our existence are portrayed. What was it for you? Chatty Cathy? Those dolls that drink & wet? The BB gun? G.I Joe? A submarine? Lincoln logs? A Duncan yo-yo or hula hoop? Frisbee? Cabbage Patch doll? Ninja something? The ultimate dream--A PONY?? Video games & electronics hadn't been invented when I was young, luckily! The game "Pong" hit the bars when I was in college!!
Since I discontinuted cable and will not be able to watch TBS's showing of Christmas Story for 24 hours on Christmas Day, I had to purchase the DVD to make my holiday complete! I cook a turkey, enjoy watching my dogs tear open their gifts, and laugh at the same scenes over and over. That is my family tradition.
