I work in IT and had been hesitant to try this technology until it had matured. Thinking this generation of product might be worth a try I bought a kit based on the reviews. The web interface for setup is simplistic and confusing at the same time. Latency was < 10ms. Signal seemed dependable in the few minutes I did test these. Google iperf bandwidth test, this is what I used to test throughput. I get 77Mbps on my Linksys WRT54G from wired port to wired port, and 19Mbps over 54g wireless. Between PLE200's on the same outlet I was getting an avg of 12Mbps. From the next room I was getting 10Mbps. I had hoped to get better or more consistent throughput than 802.11g so that I could stream my 7Mbps BeyondTV video recordings to my Govideo D2740. No such luck. - 1 star for poor documentation and interface - 2 stars for poor bandwidth. I give 2 stars because it seemed stable (but I didn't use it for long) and that it might be good for web browsing in areas where you can't get wireless to. These are already boxed up and headed back where it looks like I'll be charged a 15% restocking fee. :( Avoid these unless you're desperate!

I've tested this product against Netgear's Powerline HD adapters, both are plug-in-and-go and both support fast data rates, faster than actual 802.11g throughput in most cases. It's more expensive than a wireless solution but I haven't had much success with wireless coverage and didn't want to get too complex with repeaters and stuff. I ended up going with the Linksys product because it was somewhat faster for typical use. Both were faster than my internet pipe, came out at maybe 20 Mbps. The Linksys and Netgear products are not interoperable, they use different powerline standards.

GREAT PRICE AND NO BRAINER INSTALL

on 2/11/2008

Can't beat the price from Buy.Com - piece of cake to install - same speed as connecting directly into the router - it's basicaly a portable connection anywhere in the house - one thing to remember "don't plug into a power strip - plug directly into the receptacle - extension cord is ok"

Product Overview

The PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter lets you turn the existing powerlines in your home or office into a high-speed network. Now you don't have to drill through the walls and climb through the attic or cellar to install network cables -- just use the wires that already run through the building!

The PowerLine AV Adapter interfaces Ethernet devices to the HomePlug AV PowerLine network standard. Just plug the PowerLine AV Adapter into the wall, and connect your Ethernet-equipped device to the Adapter using the included network cable, and you've turned your whole house into network infrastructure! Attach more computers to the network by simply plugging them into the wall anywhere in the house, using more PowerLine AV Adapters.

Once your computers are connected to the network, they can share resources like printers and storage space, and all kinds of files -- music, digital pictures, and documents. With up to 100Mbps data rates, you can play lag-free head-to-head network computer games, and run media-centric applications like streaming video and Voice over IP telephony. And if you use a PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter to interface one of the famous Linksys Broadband Routers from your cable or DSL Internet connection to your PowerLine AV network, you'll be able to get to the Internet from any computer in the house.

The Linksys PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Kit is the perfect solution for high-speed, "no new wires", home or office networking.
