I work in IT, and I always use linksys products when I can for their great combination of value and reliability. This switch in particular is one of those that doesn't arouse much comment -- but that in itself is the highest comment that it can have. It does its job reliably day in and day out. Set it up and you can count on it to work.
I purchased this switch/hub to enable sharing of a single ethernet connection in a workgroup setting. The product works fine out the box and it truly delivers full network speed at each port. My only regret is that the power supply is a little bulky, but that is a small price to pay for the functionality that his product provides.
I needed to connect up a home network, and I was getting very confused between hubs, routers, access points and switches...until I downloaded the user guide for the SD205. Look at Page 4, Figure 3.1 to see what I mean...you can connect whatever you like to it. This device couldn't be easier to install, and it works beautifully. It's also tiny, and great value.
It's a great little box. Easy setup, but it generates a lot of heat. The only downside to it is the very short warranty. If I didn't have linksys equipment that's over 5 years old still chugging away, the warranty would have been a deterrant. As it stands, I'm only giving it a 4 because of the bad warranty. If it's still working after 3 years, I may be persuaded to give it a 5.
The Cisco® SD205 5-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase the speed of your network traffic. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design, tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub, which divides the network's bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 5-port 10/100 switch can potentially give you five times the network speed you currently have.
It's also the perfect way to integrate 10-Mbps Ethernet and 100-Mbps Fast Ethernet devices. All five ports are auto speed negotiating and have automatic medium dependent interface (MDI) and MDI crossover (MDI-X) detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates for best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200 Mbps of bandwidth per port. Fast store-and-forward switching prevents damaged packets from being passed on to the network.
The new ultra-compact case design is sure to fit into your workgroup environment. Let the Cisco SD205 5-Port 10/100 Switch kick your 10/100 network into high gear.
