Product Overview

Francis of Assisi:
Bradford Dillman delivers a triumphant performance as the lusty adventurer who was born into a life of privilege, but, upon hearing the voice of God, trades in his sword for a cross, in this epic tale of courage and sacrifice helmed by famed Casablanca director Michael Curtiz.

Music legend Johnny Cash stars in, sings, and narrates the timeless tale of Christ's life. This passionate labour of love, which Cash also directed, features his original songs, as well as others by June Carter Cash and Kris Kristofferson.

Editors Note
Note This fifth volume of motion pictures commemorating 20th Century Fox's 75th anniversary offers three features and one documentary all tied to spiritual themes. It begins with 1961's FRANCIS OF ASSISI, from CASABLANCA director Michael Curtiz -- starring Bradford Dillman as the adventurer born in the lap of luxury who hears the voice of God, then gives everything up to become a wandering deacon and preacher. The second item, 1973's THE GOSPEL ROAD, constitutes the most unusual item in the set -- a semi-documentary conceived and produced by country-music superstar Johnny Cash, in which Cash journeys throughout contemporary Israel and uses the locales before him to tell the story of the life and crucifixion of Christ; the film is punctuated by country-music interludes and dramatizations starring June Carter Cash (as Mary Magdalene) and director Robert Elfstrom (as Jesus). Henry Koster's 1955 A MAN CALLED PETER stars Richard Todd as Scotch minister Peter Marshall, who journeys to Washington, D.C., to accept a position as pastor of the Church of the Presidents. And finally, there's THE SONG OF BERNADETTE (1943) -- a motion picture responsible for making Jennifer Jones into an A-list Hollywood star and netting the actress an Oscar -- which stars Jones as Bernadette Soubirous, a sickly French teenager who experiences a vision of Mary and ultimately gets elevated to sainthood by the Catholic Church.
