Product Overview

Two young, diametrically opposed female soldiers patrol the anxious streets of Jerusalem, questioning Palestinians and looking for suicide bombers. The rebellious one finds the army demeaning; the controlled one is obedient. Under intense pressure, against a backdrop of any-minute-now terrorist attacks, a friendship takes hold and roles reverse.

Review It's not every day that you hear about a female-lead soldier story that looks more like a personal drama. Besides its rather gleeful disinterest in male archetypes, there's a healthy dispassion towards terrorism that is admittedly discomforting but also refreshing...Hagar and Bilu build strong characters for their actresses to inhabit...The tone of the piece becomes rocky and uneven when the film becomes more interested in Mirit and her newfound love for men. Schendar and Sayar give strikingly natural performances, nuances and all, which gives their relationship a fascinating candor. Certain scenes nail the idea of femininity in the workplace...These moments, however, are not consistent enough for Hagar and Bilu to truly give an honest perspective on females in the workplace and especially the military...Close to Home's femininity is sincere and powerful, but its essence gets lost in the film's striving for a "message."

Review Close to Home follows Paradise Now and Promises as the latest in a series of films to examine the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a personal, intimate perspective. This time the focus is on Smadar (Smadar Sayar) and Mirit (Naama Schendar), two 18-year-old Israeli women who are forced into partnership during their compulsory military service. Smadar is defiant and rebels against her duties (which consist of little beyond checking the identity cards of Palestinian passerby), while Mirit takes her orders too seriously--to an almost pathological degree. In a formula familiar to anyone who's ever seen an American buddy movie like 48Hrs or Midnight Run, the two opposites move back and forth between animosity and mutual respect over the course of their adventures together...It combines the emotional impact of great drama with the precision, detail, and context of great journalism, resulting in a vital and rewarding moviegoing experience.
