Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Muze PNote Spivey Sisters: Addie "Sweet Pease" Spivey, Elton "The Za Zu Girl" Spivey Harris (vocals).
Muze PNote Additional personnel includes: Will Johnson (guitar); Charlie Holmes (alto saxophone); Henry "Red" Allen (trumpet); Luis Russell (piano).
Muze PNote Includes liner notes by Ken Romanowski.
Muze PNote Although Victoria Spivey gained a certain amount of fame with her early blues vocals (she was an active force into the 1960s), her two sisters, whose complete work is on this CD, are much more obscure. Addie "Sweet Pease" Spivey is backed by a quartet with trumpeter Red Allen in 1929 on four numbers, and by a variety of Chicago-based musicians during 1936-37, while The Za Zu Girl (Elton Island Spivey) only had one four-song session. Both singers are somewhat limited but the backup musicians (which include trumpeter Lee Collins, pianist Althea Dickerson, and mandolinist Charley McCoy) uplift the music. An interesting historical set from the Austrian RST label. ~ Scott Yanow

Musical Guests
