By far the best set of PC speakers I have heard...

by aam11@albion.edu on 5/12/2007

The Creative Labs GigaWorks G500 speakers are by far the best PC speakers I have heard. I am a speaker person. I am always trying to upgrade sound on something (hence why I bought these). These speakers come close to some of the best speakers I have ever heard (granted I heard better from Bose but Bose speakers are insanely expensive). Setup: These speakers were very easy to set up. Plug one end of the speaker wire (provided) into each speaker and plug the other end into the sub in its clearly labeled position. If you have a SoundBlaster sound card...simply plug in the color coded minijack plugs into your card and enable 5.1 audio in the soundcard mixer. Satellites: This system is THX Certified and the satellites definitely live up to that certification. Each satellite (housed in plastic – not wood, one of the few minor beefs I have with this system) feels quite solid. Each puts out a constant 36 watts RMS (which is one of the highest RMS ratings I’ve seen on a 5.1 PC speaker system). NOTE: I have been told by numerous people in my search for car speakers/sub, home theatre system, etc. that RMS is far more important than peak power since peak power is very rarely achieved but RMS is what they system is running at constantly. Each satellite contains a 3” ported driver covered by a metallic grille brandishing the Creative and THX logos. The satellites on this system are quite superb. The highs are crisp and almost “float”. The lows that are above the crossover frequency are also quite distinct and never cause distortion in the satellites. This system has some of the best mids I have heard in a PC system (this is usually where PC systems lack) but the mids seem softer than the highs and lows (but this could be due to my personal tastes). I primarily use these speakers to listen to mp3 music and these satellites have changed how I listen to music. Even with a compressed format like mp3, these satellites push sounds that I have never heard in songs I have listened to hundreds of times. The speakers seem capable of clearly outputting each and every sound. Music is somewhat of a new experience through these satellites. Sub: The sub on this system is highly impressive. The forward firing driver posts an impressive 130 watts RMS. The sub is housed in a relatively cube-like fiber wood. The sub is where all of the connections on this system come together and is thusly where the amp is stored. This sub is the best sub I have heard in a PC speaker system. It is very tight and delivers thudding bass (In fact it turned the sub down a little from the level it was set out of the packaging). Even on extremely bass heavy music like rap, this sub never falters, providing a tight full spectrum of the lower frequencies. Even with the volume cranked all the way up (which is painful to listen to in the room I have these speakers setup) the sub (or the satellites) never distorts. Value: This is the system’s only downfall. It is a little pricy, especially for a PC system. It is a little pricy for any system. I have a 5.1 home theatre system by Philips with higher RMS and peak power ratings on each speaker (especially the sub) for about one hundred dollars less (granted the Philips system isn’t THX Certified, and thusly isn’t as clear sounding, but it still packs a bigger punch for less money). However, I usually believe that you get what you pay for…and with this system you are paying immense sound clarity and not insane volume levels. Overall: I you value sound clarity a little more than insanely loud volume levels (although this system does get loud) this system is probably the best 5.1 PC speaker system.

Product Overview

The performance-tuned ProGaming subwoofer dwarfs the competition. It combines a huge 8" front-firing long-throw woofer for chest-thumping low end, and Twin Flared DynaPorts to maximize airflow for cleaner, bigger, and more evenly dispersed bass. And there's an auxiliary input on the back of the sub to easily connect an MP3 player, letting you listen to your own music while gaming.

Each performance-tuned ProGaming satellite speaker has a 3" full-range driver and a Flared DynaPort for extended lower-midrange sound. It also combines a keyhole wall mount, speaker wire spring clips, and an industry-standard ¼"-20 connector for use with speaker stands and wall mount hardware.
