Customer Reviews of Crucial M4 256GB 2.5" SATA III Solid State Drive (SSD)
Not the fasest, but always reliable7/25/2013
Office environment where we use SSD's for a mid-cycle refresh (along with a RAM bump). I've always stuck with Crucial, Intel and Samsung. The M4 has a long reliable track record. Long in the tooth, and not the fastest unit (by far), its a significant bump from a mechanical hard drive. Given its low cost and excellent track record its perfect for an office environment.
Crucial M4 SSD4/25/2013
I have used this SSD in my MacBook Pro for a year now. It is fast in reading. Writing is slower. Compared to my other SSDs (SanDisk Extreme, Plextor), this one is relatively slow in read and write large files. Updating firmware on a Mac requires burning it to a CD. Still, I am happy with it.
Works in External Enclosure1/25/2013
I originally bought this for one of my sons, to use in his laptop. Unfortunately, his laptop only supports up to SATA II, so he felt that he didn't see much improvement in performance. So, I bought a new 7200 RPM drive, and swapped with him for this M4. I've been using this SSD in a number of USB 3.0 enclosures, to hold some VirtualBox guests' virtual drives, and I've been pleasantly surprised that with it works quite well. The VirtualBox appear to run faster than if they were on my laptop's 7200 RPM hard drive. Overall, not bad! I think that SSDs are still expensive though, in terms of $/GB.
Wow, SSD HDs are Great12/27/2012
I thought SSD HDs are limited but now they come in bigger capacity and is my better choice especially for my laptop. It lessens the risk of bumping the laptop and damaging the conventional hard disk. Surely, this SSD hard disk is a great deal. Thanks.
I bought this for my laptop which replaced a 1TB 5400 rpm hdd, which I have turned into an external hdd. It's pretty simple to install, just back up your old hdd and take it out and pop in the new ssd. I did a fresh install with windows 7 on mine since that is what is recommended. After installing all the necessary drivers for my laptop. Did a windows rating which gave the ssd a 7.9! This SSD is SUPER FAST!!! Fast boot about 20 seconds average without login and 23 seconds with login. Restarting the computer is fast! about 30 seconds and all programs load about 5-10 seconds after login! This includes skype, wifi, security program, and all others! This thing is also extremely light, I thought there was nothing in the box when I held it. It also extended the battery life for my laptop to about an extra hour! This SSD is definately worth the upgrade. I haven't had a problem since.
Greatly improved performance , i cant believable how how the computer boot up and come out of sleep.
My 2008 Mac Pro is insanely fast after installing the crucial M4. This computer was not this fast out of the box. I would recommend this upgrade to everybody. Just make sure to format SSD if the machine does not recognize it.
Nothing is PERFECT but this one is close....9/13/2012
You just cannot beat the build quality with this drive and it was very hard to beat the price from Buy.com!! They also gave me a bunch of Super points on top of the purchase so I am very happy with this! The drive itself works FLAWLESSLY and it is VERY FAST!! A+
Purchased a couple of these to upgrade our laptops. They are easy & straightforward to install and certainly increase speed. However, I should have waited to buy as the prices on these drives seem to be coming down more & more every week. If you are looking to upgrade your rig, don't hesitate to give these a try. You won't regret the improvement.
it's great SSD. Marvel controller is good~ i like this ssd~
256GB is a great size as it allows for almost all your system data and programs. Boot times are ultra fast close to 30 seconds. Response is lighting quick. Install is fast and windows 7 sees the drive, makes adjustments automatically. Installation is less than half the time. Just make sure you have the proper 2.5 mount or purchase a 3.5 to 2.5 mount for proper installation. I choose Crucial since its the MOST reliable brand for SSD. I have not found any CONS for this drive.
SSD, the way to go5/15/2012
I have been deploying this drive in laptops and desktops, Beautiful drive.
Using my system is now extremely fast, this drive is awesome. Don't know how I got along with a regular hard drive. There is no longer any waiting when loading applications, and the system boots in a manner of seconds.
Performance you can see.5/10/2012
Absolutely a must upgrade for your laptop or PC. I have a 5 year old Dell M1530 XPS and replaced a 200GB 7200rpm hard drive. After installing the Crucial M4, boot times are 10 times faster! Lag times opening windows or applications dramatically drop! Everything is so responsive. I had a 5.4 windows experience and the M4 gives me a 7.7! Highly recommended!
I thought I got the best price, but...5/8/2012
I bought this drive at 295 when others sold it for 330+. I thought i got the best price ever, but things suddently go crazy recently. 256GB of fast SSD for 210? No matter how people say 256GB version of M4 performs worse then its 128GB counterpart, no matter how people say their 256GB M4 crashed. Put those rare events behind and just enjoy the speed and capacity it offers. 128GB is probably enough for system and several games, but if you want more games loaded on your SSD, go for 256GB, and go for this fantastic M4
Installed it in my HP DV6tqe and cloned the hard drive. It booted up immediately it has performed flawlessly for the last 2 months. Machine boots in 30 seconds, including fingerprint swipe and loading gizmos, programs open instantly. Very happy with this purchase.
I'm using it in my HP Probook, easy to install, Win7 boots in 12 seconds, Win8beta boots in 6 seconds The ole 7200rpm drive used to boot Win7 in 45 seconds. One word to describe it is EXTREME!
Blazingly fast bootup of OS and applications12/4/2011
I bought this SSD for my MacBook Pro. I was astonished how it took less than 7 seconds to boot up the OS. For those who also use virtualizations (VMWare Fusion 4) or heavy applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Photoshop, this is a big must as the speeds will blow away your mind.
