If you plan to mainly use a wireless for internet activity, and not a lot of intense file sharing in a LAN setup, then 802.11g is overkill. Even with this router, I can transfer files between machines at up to 500 KBytes/sec. The web based interface is simple to use to configure the router to port forward to any computer on the LAN so you can run servers (ftp, httpd) and any other application that requires listening ports open. The 128 bit encryption is also easy to set up. The built in DHCP is also great and allows for the assignment of static IPs based on ethernet cards MAC address, so the ports you forward for your server machine's IP stay your server machine's IP. If you don't even know what I'm talking about, don't worry. This thing is practically ready to go out of the box for the average user. But don't forget to turn on you 128 bit encryption... What more can I say? Ease of use, great price, total satisfaction.

Now that 802.11g is here 802.11b products are mature, stable, and a relieble source of wireless connectivity. I set my parents up with this kit since it is cheap and most likely wont need any upgrades, or check-ups anytime soon. This and the DWL-520 saved me from having to drill holes in their walls, or route cable where it just looks bad. This kit provides the right things to enable my dad's laptop to be wireless in the house and outside on the porch where he likes to relax. The setup was a breeze, and the installation was even easier. I don't see how you can mess up the installation on these 2 products because of the documentation that comes with these and the simple to follow setup wizards.

Bang for the buck

We have atleast 4 - 5 laptops in our apartment, and running cables around the house has been a hassle for us. So finally we decided to get the Router and a wireless card. The router will install in a snap if you know what you are doing. I would suggest you read the quick install guide first. You should know what kind of Broadband connection you have (mostly DSL, or cable). When you choose the correct options, ther router is installed and ready to go. I would suggest using a wired connection to install your router, and then proceed to install your wireless access card. Make sure that you dont position your router very close to something ferromagnetic. This will reduce your signal intensity. The PCMCIA access card was very good in terms of range. It was able to pickup signals via the ceiling, which is very good. I hve another card which was not good picking signals if you moved away. I have Win XP Professional installed on my computer. I think you need to install the driver from the CD, Windows was not able to install the driver on its own. The router has advanced features like IP filtering, MAC filtering which will allow restricted users to access the network. Few Wireless tips 1. Some points in your house may have signal blackouts. They are similar to the ones you experience with your cellphones. The signals will be very good, and suddenly they fade away. If you experience anything like this, just move your computer by a couple of inches and things should be okay. This is not a problem with the router, but problems inherent in wireless communications. 2. If you are contemplating between 802.11b and 802.11g, find out the bandwidth of your broadband connection. My connection is around 1 Mbps, so both are equally good. 802.11b supports upto 11 Mbps, while 802.11g supports upto 54Mbps if I remember right. There is no reason to go to 802.11g unless the bandwidth of your connection is greater than 11 Mbps. To be short, this is a great product and you will love it.
