|The advanced wireless technology built into the DI-524 now offers up to 54Mbps through its wireless channels, allowing streaming videos and other high bandwidth applications, such as online gaming events to operate without the hassle of Ethernet cables. The ability to transfer high bandwidth also makes streaming real time programs more enjoyable and more efficient. Network Security is a precautionary threat and with the built-in advanced firewall, these threats are minimized, making it more difficult for hackers to penetrate through the DI-524. Features like content filtering, MAC filtering, URL blocking, and Domain blocking are useful tools to prevent other unwanted intruders to connect to your network.|
Customer Reviews of D-Link DI-524 Wireless Cable/DSL Router 4-Port Switch - 802.11G - 54Mbps
works great; reliable8/8/2008
I bought this router in March of 2006 and am using it ever since. It works great; breeze to setup and privatize your network if you are a bit computer savvy. I didnt have any signal drop issues for the length of the time I have used it; the only 3 times when the router seemed to be locked up (All the lights go ON) is when there was a power spike. At peak, atleast 3 laptops connected to this router wirelessly and 2 more via LAN. The speed seemed to take a hit only when all of us were downloading huge files simultaneously, but thats understandable I guess. Overall, works great; very reliable; havent had an issue yet (touch wood).
There are better products out there8/17/2007
I've obtained this thing from my wife (newlyweds), and we are now in the market for something else. The unit is very slow, with limited range (<30ft from where our laptop sits and it disconnects half the time). At this point, I would have spent less time crawling underneath the house to run CAT-5 cable than I have spent trying to get this thing to work consistently. 54MBs? Yeah right - maybe with 95% overhead and 5% usable bandwidth. There are better units out there, so don't waste your time with this junk.
I've just rec'd my router, set up in about 15 min, and right off it detected settings, connected, and runs great! Small, easy to use, glad I bought it when I did, now un-available from Mft. Would reccomend it highly. I've used other more expensive brands that were harder to set up, should have bought this first.
Solved the dropping/disconecting signal!5/22/2006
I had the same problem as many other people with this product at the beggining. The router kept on disconecting me every few hours. I spoke with the D-link customer support people and they weren't help the fist time I talked to them. On the second try I got help from someone who actually knew what he was doing. The reason why the router kept on disconecting/dropping the signal was because both the router and the modem(DSL) had the same IP address, so they were both trying to connect with the same address and that's why it kept on disconecting. All you have to do is assign a different address to the wireless router and that will solve all your problems. The D-link customer people should be able to walk you through the process of changing the ip address of your wireless router. Ever since they helped me change the ip address, it has worked great, the signal doesn't drop and it stays connected without dropping the signal!
Not a product I would buy again.5/20/2006
I bought this product back in February to replace a Linksys that was having some difficulty with streaming audio and video files. Everything worked fine for the first month or so, then I noticed that my Internet connection was slowing down drastically during heavy usage times on my LAN. I thought maybe this was a problem with my cable ISP, but ultimately the D-Link router locked up and would not reconnect to the Internet no matter what I did. Simply put, this has not been a good experience. Based on past experiences in dealing with router manufacturers I simply bought another cheap router to replace this one.
This router is very good5/16/2006
At the beginning I had mi doubts about this purchase, you know, some of the reviews are not exactly the best, but after a very easy and clear set up and about 10 minutos you are ready to go! I haven't been able to run mayor tests on the range yet, but so far it's been better than linksys 54g's which I happen to have as well. The conexion has worked smoothly so far and I can say that I'm really satisfied with my purchase and I really recomend this product. I'm not an advanced user so don't rely on my word if you're looking for router that allows you to hack the NASA lol, but if you just want something that will allow you connect to the internet both using a cable and / or wireless conexion, this is what you're looking for.
This stuff is awesome and easy to install5/4/2006
I am happy to have this product. Its performance is Amazing.Go for it .
Simple Mac installation4/3/2006
This is my first wireless router and I connected my Mac Powerbook without real problems. The setup wizard on the enclosed CD-ROM won't run on a Mac but I opened the quick installation guide pdf and followed the instructions. It was pretty straightforward and I was connected in minutes to my Earthlink DSL modem, setting WPA encryption and turning MAC address filtering on. Then I connected via my Airport card and couldn't get through at first until I realized that the Airport card has a different MAC address from the Ethernet card in my Powerbook. Once I added that MAC address into the router, I got in without a hitch and it works like a charm.
I just switched from Linksys 802.11b network to D-Link 802.11g network. The transition was very smooth. Nice speed, compatible with my vonage service, and virtually no problems so far.
Great value and performance2/5/2006
I have used this router for several months now - can't beat the price and performance. I replaced a Linksys 801.11 B wireless router that was not working with my new work laptop. Setup was easy and I was up and running in less than 30 minutes - now I have a budding wireless network (1 hard wired and 1 wireless desktop plus my laptop and a Nokia web tablet) working flawlessly. Wireless routers seem to be hit or miss for some people - look at the reviews for any product and you are bound to see a negative one. In my opinion, this is one of the best deals going!
Great for the novice1/16/2006
This product was exacly what I needed to connect wirelessly at home and also was very easy to set up for VPN also. I previously purchased a DLink product (webcam) for a cheaper price than the name brand and I always remembered that it was a great product for the price. Now DLink is a name brand and still offers a great price
Difficult setup for Apple computers9/24/2005
Initial setup was time consuming and not well explained. Other than that, it does a fine job.
works as advertised6/19/2005
MAC filtering feature needs to be more versatile. Would like to have 2 seperate MAC lists - one for LAN adapters, one for WLAN adapters. Manual could also be more helpful when users want to explore security options w/ WPA & WPA-PSK.
I bought this wireless router to get out of my basement! It took just a bit of configuration with my DSL provider but once I followed the directions--to a T, it worked like a charm. I have not had the dropped signal issues other reviewers have had. No problems--I am completely satisfied and working upstairs and even in the back yard! I'm a happy customer. = )
A D-Link Wireless Router is the way to go!3/21/2005
I had a couple other brands of wireless routers and none of them were as easy to use and performed as good as this D-Link router. There is no need to mention their names since they didn't work well, all you need to know is that this D-Link router, does work well. After being hosed over by other routers I moved on to D-Link and wasn't very enthusiastic to be opening another router box and getting it all setup. But much to my surprise this router handled everything quick and easy. Setup went by in about a minute, just followed the wizard that guides you through it all. Then opened some ports for my special programs, and made sure to secure my wireless network (change SSID, channel, and updated my WEP key). I feel secure and my connection isn't dropping anymore. MARVELOUS! I am very pleased with this D-Link router and would suggest to others who are having issues getting their "other" brands to work, to just buy a D-Link router. Thanks to D-Link for not making me have to go back to the store again.
Very Simple and Inexpensive Router3/21/2005
I chose this router and not the DI-624 because it is slightly cheaper, and I don't need 108Mbps for my built in Wi-Fi on my laptop. Anyhow, this DI-524 router was easy to install, just walk through the setup wizard, and it handles everything I can throw at it. I do a lot of P2P sharing and this router hasn't given me any connection problems for the 3 weeks I've had it. Wireless is strong in my small-ish townhome and I even get some signal outside on my balcony. Which is nice for some e-book reading, or music streaming while playing online solitare or something. :) Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to other not-so-techie people for it's simplicity and ease of use.
Great router, but don't update the firmware2/20/2005
Actually, the router performs very well, as long as you don't upgrade the firmware to the 1.05 version, which brings the wireless portion of this router to a halt. Yes, I have spent hours trying to figure out why my wireless device would suddenly drop off the network... There are actually 2 revisions of this product (rev. A and rev. C) -- I hope that rev. C is the current one and that the firmware behaves better. Otherwise, as long as you leave the firmware at v.1.03 (on the rev. A product), it will work flawlessly. I use it to stream music to my Apple AirPort Express and it never drops the connection.
Wireless is Better1/28/2005
My initial reaction taking the router out of the box was - what did I get myself into? The instruction booklet did a good job of giving an illustrated, step-by-step view of how to set everything up. I did need some additional help, especially when the router stopped working for little or no reason. A call to the 24/7 free D-Link tech-support department taught me how to set it up with encryption, so that no one could tap into it. A quick, free download of updated firmware fixed the problems that I had been experiencing with my router. In summation, I was very surprised that D-Link was able to help me out so quickly, and at no extra cost. The range of the router is the same as a 2.4 GHz phone - all around my house and even some area outside! Overall, this is definitely a GREAT router. It is even better considering I'm sitting comfortably in my living room watching TV, eating lunch, and surfing the 'net - all at the same time!
I bought this item to replace the Linksys version that I was using at the time. Since I was utilizing the D-Link card, I wanted to keep the “brand continuity.” I really should have left well enough alone! Even after upgrading the firmware of both the card and router, I lose connectivity almost every half an hour (no exaggeration.) I happen to be a Network Engineer and still find this to be beyond frustrating! “Hard wired,” I have no problems but I didn’t buy a WIRELESS router to be “hard wired!” What compounds the problem is that I have a wireless print-server in my printer so when the router goes down, I can’t print! Thank G*d my VOIP phone does not go through the router but, even though the gateway is D-Link as well, I seem to have no problems with that (knock on wood.) To make matters worse, as if the issues I’m having with their equipment aren’t enough, D-Link just sent me a notice saying that they won’t honor my rebate claim because they can’t find the UPC label that I sent them. Lovely! I used to think highly of D-Link but now all I can say is save yourself the aggravation.
