Editor's Note
Prefiguring other guilty pleasures like MELROSE PLACE and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, this nighttime soap revolutionized the genre. DALLAS centers on a rich Texas family and features an all-star cast including Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Barbara Bel Geddes, Linda Gray, and Victoria Principal. Season six begins after the cliffhanger ending of season five that left Southfork in flames and the Ewings in danger. Even though they survived the flames, they've moved out of the fire and into the frying pan. Sue Ellen tells J.R. she wants an open marriage, Pam and Bobby's relationship is in shambles, and Ray is on trial for manslaughter. Though audiences had long ago learned who shot J.R., the show hasn't lost any of its can't-miss status in this highly rated season.

Professional Reviews

The DVD Report 9 of 10
...Dallas is the epitome of the prime-time drama/soap opera genre. Premiering in 1978 as a five part mini-series, the show combines the usual sex and innuendo of classic afternoon soap operas with the freewheeling adventure of Texas wildcats and filthy rich capitalist oil barons. The combination of business dealings and rampant affairs tested well with both the male and female demographic, prompting CBS to make Dallas a regular part of its prime-time lineup. The result was one of the most successful television shows in history. - Britt Gillette

The Boston Phoenix's 8 of 10
The popularity of potboiler mini-series like Rich Man, Poor Man inspired CBS to try a nighttime soap opera. Dallas soon became the most popular show on TV, in large part because of Larry Hagman's performance as the villainous J.R. Ewing. Besides inspiring several other soaps, Dallas began the practice of ending each season with a cliffhanger -- notably the "Who Shot J.R.?" storyline. Eventually, Dallas was done in by a paradox of nighttime soaps. Such programs promise twists in their storylines, but they really depend on stable casts, just as on sit-coms. - Robert David Sullivan
