Customer Reviews of Dark City
A must for Cult Fans.3/15/2002
Everyone has already said it when it comes to this film. Overlooked, underappreciated. What wasn't said was that the DVD version is fantastic, with top sound and picture, well worth being in your collection simply because those who haven't seen it get to be blown away by your showing it. This is the kind of video transfer and sound that should have been on the Blade Runner DVD, but wasn't.
Watch it at all costs.1/30/2000
The thing that blew me away first was the cinematography. Then I walked out of the theater thinking that it was the most original movie I'd seen in years. Blade Runner has always been one of my favorite movies of all time, but Dark City is now ranked right up there with it.
a great reason to buy a dvd player.12/23/1999
Three things One: Dark City is much better than it's Hollywood counterpart (The Matrix). Two: This DVD has a whole bunch of fun things to do on it. Three: If you really want to get wierded out, play the movie in French with English subtitles.
An outstanding piece of work11/27/1999
There isn't much to add to what others have already stated in praise of 'Dark City'. Proyas' previous film, The Crow, indeed lacked substance. I watched it after watching Dark City and it left a very sour impression. The highly successful 'The Matrix' starring Keanu Reeves following 'Dark City' was in fact almost entirely based on the Dark City theme. Dark City was a better movie, and deserves a place higher up amongst cult-setters. Unfortunately, audiences often don't realize the merit of a movie unless it has a well-known cast with 'name-brand' actors. Dark City is a smarter movie, with more intricate twists, and less gut-splattering violence.
Easily the most underrated film of 199810/13/1999
This film is the next cult classic -- a masterpiece completely overlooked by audiences and many critics. I value it as highly as I do Terry Gilliam's Brazil and most of his other films. I was hesitant to watch it when it came out -- I didn't see any previews or commercials, and I felt that The Crow (Proyas film before this one) was terribly overrated and all style with no substance. A friend highly recommended I see Dark City despite my feelings of The Crow. I was blown away! In truth, it is a milestone in Sci-Fi, genius in every artistic and carefully crafted scene. I bought this DVD and have shown it to several other friends and family, and each one was mesmerized. One thing -- the story and acting has a bit of a 'rushed' feeling to it, but it seems as though that's how it had to be done to get the whole story in. It would have been nicer if the film was drawn out a bit another 30 minutes to an hour to soak in the drama and the visuals more. All else besides, it is one breathtaking experience.
Excellent movie for you collection8/3/1999
I was really suprized that this movie was as good as it was. I wasn't too impressed with the trailer and never saw it in the theater. Many many people on Usenet recommended it and I'm glad they did. Really a good film. The extras were great. Ebert did a great job on the commentary.
Truly magnificent Sci-Fi. Captures the imagination and creates the same futuristic feel as Blade Runner.
The most creative movie since Blade Runner!6/14/1999
In my opinion, this was the best movie for 1998. Alex Proyas delivered one of the best works in cinematography I have seen in many years. This is a futuristic movie that will be an example for sci-fi in years to come. Simply outstanding!
Truly Creative Sci-Fi !!6/3/1999
Wow !! It's so rare to get a truly creative and original sci-fi film, but this one definitely delivers. Sure it borrows some stylistic elements from Blade Runner but the story is very imaginative and wait till you see the finale.
Dark City gives light to Sci Fi5/25/1999
Dark City is a must-see for sci-fi fans and for the rest, it's one of the most visually stunning and thought-provoking films of 1998! If you've ever walked into a room and forgotten why you were there, you have to see Dark City! (two thumbs WAY up)
Creative Filming and Original Plot5/9/1999
Great movie! The dark atmosphere and incredible special effects mesh well with the suspensful dreamlike plot. I can't think of another film that combines modern movie magic and symbolic elements so eloquently.
Not To Be Missed5/3/1999
This movie was way overlooked during its theatrical release. It is one of the most suspensful, intelligent, and visually striking films I have viewed in years. This should be a cult classic a la Bladerunner by the next millenium, once the overhyped Matrix (which borrows heavily from this movie) will have worn out its welcome. For once, I agreee with Roger Ebert, who named Dark City his favorite movie of 1998!
