Bogey's on the lam and Bacall's at his side in Dark Passage, Delmer Daves' stylish film-noir thriller that's the third of four films Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made together. Bogart is Vincent Parry, a prison escapee framed for murder who emerges from plastic surgery with a new face. Bacall is Irene Jansen, Vincent's lone ally. In a supporting role, Agnes Moorehead portrays Madge, a venomous harpy who finds pleasure in the unhappiness of others. The chemistry of the leads is undeniable, and they augment it here with exceptional tenderness. Exceptional, too, are the atmospheric San Francisco locations and the imaginative camera work that shows Vincent's point of view - but not his face - until the bandages are removed. Lest Irene get ideas, the post-surgery Vincent tells her: "Don't change yours. I like it just as it is." So do we. - 1947 Running Time: 106 min.Format: DVD MOVIE

"Bacall is stunning. Bogart is commanding and full of his usual intrigue.  The Motion Picture Guide

Editor's Note
Bogart and Bacall headline a wild tale of an escapee from San Quentin who has his face surgically altered to allow him the freedom to find his wife's murderer. Now a man without a past, he meets a sultry stranger willing to put him up until his face heals and they can solve the mystery.

Professional Reviews

Reel.com 7 of 10
The performances live up to the legends who gave them, though as a "Bogey & Bacall" vehicle, it doesn't come close to classics like Key Largo and The Big Sleep. Bogart's eyes, behind a gauze-wrapped face, add a whole new depth to the definition of "soulful"...All the supporting actors are fantastic: Clifton Young is bug-eyed and frenetic, a speed-talking, more (yes, more) sociopathic 1947 version of The Sopranos' Ralphie. Bruce Bennett and Agnes Moorehead (best known to current generations as Endora, Tabitha's mother, on Betwitched) have palpable chemistry as the sidekicks and zing repartee back and forth. - Sarah Chauncey
