With an extraordinarily acute take on the extremist mind, the award-winning author of Ratking gives readers an electrifying story of interconnected lives, all of which spin in a desperate orbit around a man known to his followers as the "Eternal Prophet."

"From the Hardcover edition.

From the Publisher:
A "cunningly crafted thriller" ("Seattle Times") by the author of "Cosi Fan Tutti" and "Ratking". A Seattle detective investigates a seemingly motiveless multiple murder. A teacher in St. Paul is cruelly bereft of his wife and son. When the paths of these two people intersect, they enter the orbit of a man named Los, an eerily plausible prophet whose followers travel thousands of miles to kill for him.The interconnected lives of police detectives investigating multiple murders, a family man whose life has been destroyed by seemingly random events, and members of a mysterious cult all revolve around the enigmatic and evil figure of the cult leader, known as the Eternal Prophet
Annotation:
On an island off the coast of Washington state, a druggie college dropout and Vietnam vet has transformed himself into "Los the Eternal Prophet" and established a private compound. To be initiated into his cult, male prospective members go out among the unenlightened and murder them in their homes. The women followers remain at the compound and serve as Los's sexual partners. Phil, a college professor whose son has been kidnapped, and Kristine Kjarstad, a homicide detective, are both unwittingly closing in on Los--but he's not going down without a fight.

San Francisco Chronicle Book Review
"...about a third of the way through the book, we're captivated by Dibdin's control of his story and his perfectly modulated pacing."

Washington Post Book World
"Against the backdrop of today's increasingly bizarre, headline-making cults, Dark Specter...is especially chilling and relevant. Dibdin is willing to go beyond cop-shop talk and page-turning tricks, preferring to challenge his readers with ideas. A smart stylist, he could make as compelling an essayist as he does a thriller writer. His gifts are clearly in evidence in Dark Specter."
