Product Overview

This lovely assembled 23-track package collects the classic jazzman's most memorable vocal recordings from 1938 until 1967, and arranged in reverse chronological order, literally taking you back through the years as the tracks proceed. Kicking off with Armstrong's ubiquitous postumous hit "what A Wonderful World," recorded at one of his last sessions in 1967 just a few years before his death in 1971. The rest of the album is an enlightening trip through four decades of the classic New Orleans jazzman's music, focusing on Armstrong's uniquely gruff, but perennially toothy vocals that were a forerunner for artists as diverse as Howlin' Wolf and Tom Waits.

More impressive is his ability to rearrange standards of other, non-jazz genres and make them his own. His joyous duets with Ella Fitzgerald and Bing Cosby exhibit the fun he had singing with friends, and how effortlessly that translated to his recordings. This package features stunningly remastered sound (even the earliest cuts from 1938 are hiss free, full-bodied and remarkably clear), along with a classy 16-page booklet with rare photos and detailed session liner notes. It's not the final word on the prolific and multi-talented musician who some consider the most influential jazzman ever, but is an excellent overall portrait of Satchmo, covering numerous highlights in the career of this legendary American artist.

Album Notes and Credits
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Perry Botkin, Bud Scott (guitar); Kid Ory, Tyree Glenn (trombone); Billy Kyle (piano); Red Callender, Arvell Shaw (bass instrument); Barrett Deems (drums).
This extensive compilation of vocal tracks from the latter part of Louis Armstrong's career features many of his most popular performances, including the 1960s hits "Hello Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World," and his wonderfully relaxed duet with Bing Crosby on "Gone Fishin'." However, even on these more commercially slanted songs, the trumpeter's legendary musical skill is apparent--his soaring solo on "Dolly" effortlessly cruises the instrument's upper registers, and his vocal interpretation of "Mack the Knife" is a masterpiece of jazz singing.
Artist Overview
Trumpeter/vocalist Louis Armstrong is perhaps the single most influential artist in the history of jazz. He started out in the "hot" bands of 1920s New Orleans, and was one of the first to introduce solo improvisation into the jazz idiom. Over the next several decades, his style altered little, but his disciples were legion. Armstrong, affectionately known as "Satchmo," was among the most loved figures in American popular music; his prolific recording career, along with the timeless nature of his work, ensures that his legacy will continue.
