Album Notes and Credits

Notes & Personnel Info
Muze PNote Clarinetist Johnny Dodds made a lot of fine records as leader, sideman, accompanist, and member of collectively organized units. His discography is filled with compilations spotlighting different portions of a wonderfully productive but all-too-brief career. Retrieval's Definitive Dodds zeroes in on the years 1926-1927, spotlighting Dodds with Lil's Hot Shots (a thinly veiled Louis Armstrong group), the New Orleans Wanderers, and the New Orleans Bootlblacks. Additionally, tracks 12-22 feature Dodds at the helm of his own Black Bottom Stompers. These fine early jazz recordings allow us to hear him at the height of his powers, working in collaboration with Louis and Lil Armstrong, Kid Ory, Earl Hines, Barney Bigard (playing tenor sax), and Johnny's brother Warren Baby Dodds. The inclusion of four alternate takes allows for solo comparison. Those who desire a different approach may opt for similarly well-constructed Dodds samplers on Affinity, ASV/Living Era, Black & Blue, EPM, Frog, Louisiana Red Hot, MCA, or Past Perfect. A compilation on Timeless concentrates upon his work with pianist Jimmy Blythe, and the complete Dodds chronology on Classics offers the master takes from all of his primary sessions. As for Retrieval's Definitive Dodds, it lives up to the title by presenting a digestible selection of his best work in a single comprehensive package. ~ arwulf arwulf
