A. Milne. Promptly renamed, Pooh appeared in a few children’s books and several poems, each illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Later on, the Walt Disney Company dropped the hyphens in the character’s name when it adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh featurettes, quickly becoming a successful franchise in the company. The origin of Winnie the Pooh is a conception fueled by the imagination of Milne’s son, Christopher Robin Milne, the inspiration for the character Christopher Robin, and his toy bear. Christopher had named his stuffed bear Winnie, after the real life bear, Winnipeg, whom his father and he would often visit at the London Zoo. The name “Pooh” is speculated to have been the name of a swan the two had encountered on vacation. When the Walt Disney Company acquired the Winnie the Pooh rights in the 1930’s, the sky was the limit for him and the other characters of the 100 Acre Wood. Pooh and friends have stared in a live action series, several recreated animated series, many straight to video featurettes and theatrical feature-length films The Tiger Movie, Piglet’s Big Move and Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, as well as video games, clothing, toys and other products. ***Please note that these products cannot be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
