delirium

Oliver’s artfully detailed prose reveals, brick by brick, the sturdy dramatic foundation of an initially implausible premise. In her dystopian America, love has been outlawed as the life-threatening source of all discord. Citizens submit at the age of 18 to a neurological procedure that "cures" them of amor deliria nervosa, the chief symptoms of which are passionate feelings about anything. Poetry and contact between members of opposite sexes are forbidden; the authoritarian government rules with suspicion, violence and bureaucratically arranged marriages. As Lena, the soon-to-be-18 narrator, approaches the date of her procedure with both trepidation and relief, she meets Alex, a boy who inspires feelings that upend everything she has believed about her community and herself. Lena’s gradual awakening is set against a convincing backdrop of totalitarian horror. Chilling epigraphs from the government's rewritten histories begin each chapter, providing contextual propaganda so thorough that they've even reinterpreted the Bible to suit their message. The abrupt ending leaves enough unanswered questions to set breathless readers up for volume two of this trilogy. Read More

"Oliver's artfully detailed prose reveals, brick by brick, the sturdy dramatic foundation of an initially implausible premise....The abrupt ending leaves enough unanswered questions to set breathless readers up for volume two of this trilogy." (starred review)
"Brilliant! From the minute intricacies of the heroine's love for running to the shades of gray which she begins to see as she realizes that all is not as it seems in her society, Oliver's sophomore novel is a beautiful, rich story." (top pick)
From the Publisher
Annotation In a dystopian world where a cruel totalitarian government has declared love a crime and hindrance to society's good, people have a medical procedure at age 18 to remove the possibility of strong emotions. Harsh rules are enforced involving separation of the sexes, poetry is outlawed, and arranged marriage is a given. Soon to be 18, Lena is both excited and nervous about the surgery. But when she meets Alex and falls in love, all of her assumptions and beliefs are challenged. This is the first book in the Delirium trilogy. Lauren Oliver is also the author of the superb young adult novel BEFORE I FALL.
Editors Note Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't. Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, Before I Fall. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "raw, emotional, and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking." Her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.
