Spirituality & Practice 9 of 10
[Blues] Not only is Spike Lee one of the most creative film stylists around, his cinematic creations are incredibly topical. Whereas Do the Right Thing dealt with the public issue of racial hatred, Mo' Better Blues revolves around the difficulty modern men have in finding the proper balance between work and love in their lives...Mo' Better Blues transcends the jazz film genre by its exploration of the limitations of investing one's entire being in work. Bleek's life is set on an alternate course when he is seriously injured trying to save Giant from being beaten to death by two goons hired by a loan shark...Bleek has swung to the other side of the pendulum and still not found the promised land where work and love are in balanced. But writer, producer, and director Spike Lee has at least staked out the territory in a creative way. - Frederic & Mary Ann Brussat

ReelViews 9 of 10
[Hurricane] "Hate put me in prison. Love's gonna bust me out." Those words, spoken by Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (Denzel Washington), form the thematic foundation of Norman Jewsion's latest film...The Hurricane not only details the crime and the miscarriage of justice that followed, but shows how Carter survived the long, lonely years in prison, and how the devotion of a small group of Canadians led to his redemption...The movie premiered as a work print at the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival...More than two hours later, when the film's final frame had faded to black, The Hurricane received a rousing, three-minute standing ovation. The applause was well-deserved and the enthusiasm in that auditorium will likely be replicated all across the world as audiences file out of theaters after seeing this beautifully crafted and uplifting movie biography. - James Berardinelli

Variety 8 of 10
[Inside] A thriller that aims to be different, "Inside Man" stirs some very tasty flavors into its familiar bank robbery/hostage crisis plot, which helps conceal the modest portion of the central ingredient, suspense. A flashy cast, clever script and vibrant showcasing of New York City as the ultimate melting pot are strong plusses for Spike Lee's most mainstream studio venture, which Denzel Washington's name should propel to solid returns for Universal...With Matthew Libatique behind the camera for his second consecutive picture with Lee, rough-and-ready visuals are of a piece with those of the helmer's previous pics. - Todd McCarthy
