| A masterful continuation of the James Bond legacy, "Devil May Care" picks up right where Ian Fleming left off--at the height of the Cold War, with a story of almost unbearable tension. |
Annotation:
Since Ian Fleming's death in 1964, his James Bond franchise has taken on a life of its own, with numerous authors stepping into the void to resurrect the adventures of the immaculate and irresistible agent 007. With the exception of Kingsley Amis, few of these writers have had the literary cache of Sebastian Faulks (BIRDSONG, CHAROLETTE GRAY), who, in commemoration of Fleming's 100th birthday, has taken the helm of the venerable British spy series. Featuring a slightly older and more jaded version of Mr. Bond, THE DEVIL MAY CARE soon falls into all the familiar scenarios: gambling in Monte Carlo, bedding rich foreign women, and battling nefarious plots with aplomb. The arch-villain this time around is Julius Gorner, whose hatred of the U.K. has led to a plan to inundate the country with heroin junkies, reducing the country to Third World status.

| To coincide with the 100th anniversary of his birth, Ian Fleming’s estate commissioned author Sebastian Faulks to write Devil May Care, which came out in hardcover in May 2008 and in paperback the following May. He is credited on the cover “writing as Ian Fleming,” but it’s not clear what the designation is supposed to mean. Does that make the story official Bond canon, is Faulks separating the book from his other works, or is it just marketing? Some combination of all three may be the answer. because while the book has some good elements for those who enjoy the spy genre, its flaws ultimately cause it to fall flat....read the full review | |
