Product Overview

When prosecutor Vicki Allegretti arrives at a rowhouse to meet a confidential informant, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time -- and is almost shot to death. She barely escapes with her life, but cannot save the two others gunned down before her disbelieving eyes. Stunned and heartbroken, Vicki tries to figure out how a routine meeting on a minor case became a double homicide.

Vicki''s suspicions take her to Devil''s Corner, a city neighborhood teetering on the brink of ruin -- thick with broken souls, innocent youth, and a scourge that preys on both. But the deeper Vicki probes, the more she becomes convinced that the murders weren''t random and the killers were more ruthless than she thought.

When another murder thrusts Vicki together with an unlikely ally, she buckles up for a wild ride down a dangerous street -- and into the cross-hairs of a conspiracy as powerful as it is relentless.

Lisa Scottoline
Lisa Scottoline is best known for her bestselling series featuring the women of the all-female law firm Rosato & Associates. Although the books are generally described as legal thrillers, she told one journalist, "What I'm doing is writing stories about women who care about justice. They are women who think about the difference between right and wrong, what's legal and illegal, ethical and unethical, moral and immoral. . . . So it doesn't matter what the character's occupation is." Scottoline, an avid fan of Nancy Drew mysteries while growing up, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in the nearby suburb of Bala Cynwyd. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in English. (Her focus was on the contemporary American novel, and among her professors was Philip Roth.) In 1981 she completed her studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law and embarked upon a career as a civil litigator. In 1986, soon after her daughter, Francesca, was born, Scottoline left her firm for the life of a stay-at-home mom. She subsequently began to write the first Rosato & Associates novel, EVERYWHERE THAT MARY WENT, which was published in 1994--after a long string of painful rejection notices. Since then, she has written numerous other books in the series, as well as several stand-alone novels and memoirs. Additionally, she pens a regular newspaper column, "Chick Wit," along with Francesca. Twice divorced, Scottoline, who has been a president of the Mystery Writers of America, lives in an 18th-century stone farmhouse on more than 40 acres of land in Pennsylvania's Chester County, where she hosts annual fan-appreciation gatherings. (Attendees are chosen by lottery.) Sharing the property are several dogs, cats, horses, and chickens.
Praise
"Scottoline's ability to mix humor with serious subject matter, combined with her intense research of inner city drug trafficking and a side plot involving Vicki's love life, make for compelling entertainment."
"Although we miss...Rosato & Associates, whose members are the heroines of Scottoline's popular series, this stand-alone thriller...makes an entertaining and exciting change of pace."

Annotation This thriller from the bestselling author of the Rosato & Associates series borrows elements from an actual drug-trafficking trial. Arriving for a planned meeting with a pregnant informant, assistant U.S. attorney Vicki Allegretti finds two gun-toting teenagers there instead, one of whom has apparently already killed the woman Vicki was to meet. While she fights for her life with one of the kids (eventually emerging unscathed), her assailant's pal puts four fatal bullets into Vicki's colleague, ATF agent Bob "Morty" Morton. Vicki resolves to seek justice for the murders, a quest which sends her trawling through the dangerous Philadelphia neighborhood that locals call the "Devil's Corner," guided by one of its denizens, Reheema Bristow, who has her own reasons for helping Vicki.
