Annotation:
In 1537, the conflict in England between Catholics and the newly established Church of England is at its height, as monasteries are closed and turned into secular institutions. When a Church official is murdered in one of them, a hunchbacked lawyer named Matthew Shardlake is hired by the king's men to investigate the crime. What he finds on his arrival at Scarnsea Monastery makes neither side look good--and Shardlake's own life may be in danger.
