Dona Flor And Her Two Husbands (1978)

Editor's Note Dona Flora (Sonia Braga) is a young widow who remarries only to have her dead husband returning to her in spirit. While her ex never treated her right except in bed, her new husband is dependable if dull in the sack. What's Dona to do but take the best of both worlds--even if one of them is, strictly speaking, beyond the grave? This magical realist sex-comedy was a huge hit in its native Brazil and is based on the novel by Jorge Amado; it was later remade into the Sally Field film KISS ME GOODBYE.

A straight-laced young woman in 1940s Brazil experiences a sexual awakening when she marries an abusive but irresistible philanderer. When fast living leads her spouse to an early grave, the young widow marries his exact opposite -- a dull, super-reliable druggist who offers the security her first marriage lacked but none of the passion. Yearning for the old fireworks, the woman manages to conjure up the ghost of her deceased husband and finds that death has not diminished his seductive powers.
