STROP DRESSING. Made in Germany. What is Strop Dressing? Dovo straight razors should be maintained using a strop, a flexible strip of leather or canvas that is used to straighten and polish the blade. Strops may be hanging strops or hand-held paddles. Quality strops are made of durable and flexible materials with a proper thickness and texture. Strop materials includes canvas, cowhide, horsehide and imitation leather. Strops should have a smooth finished surface. Stropping is primarily used for straight razors because the blades are very thin. Stropping should be done after every use to ensure the blade is sharp and that any indentations do not cause nicks and cuts. Honing and sharpening a blade, such as a knife blade, uses a whetstone to remove metal that is bent out of alignment from the blade. Stropping, though, re-aligns the indentations without removing any of the blade's metal. Abrasive compounds can be added to the strop to help polish and sharpen the blade. Strops should be maintained by using strop dressing. This type of leather dressing is specifically made for straight razor strops. Two types of products are used with leather strops - dressing and paste. Pastes polish and sharpen the straight razor blade. Each type of paste contains different compounds to achieve a different result. Some pastes are intended for polishing only while others provide polishing and sharpening. Unlike paste, strop dressing does not sharpen the blade. The dressing cleans and conditions the leather while preserving the finish. Dressing improves the draw and sharpening qualities of the strop. Using strop dressing conditions and lubricates the leather keeping it soft, smooth and free of cracks. Strop dressing does not contain abrasives and can be used daily. The leather strop should not be used for at least 24 hours after the strop dressing is applied. Col. Conk strop dressing is a specially formulated, fat-based leather strop dressing.
