Reviews
ReviewSource Classic Film Guide
Review Directed by William Keighley, with a screenplay written by Warren Duff and Norman Reilly Raine (The Life of Emile Zola (1937)), this drama features James Cagney, George Raft, and Jane Bryan (among others). What begins as a fairly interesting story becomes rather muddled and unbelievable toward its end, though it's definitely NOT formulaic. However, there's no faulting the acting whether it's Cagney's intensity, Bryan's commitment, or Raft's tough guy persona.

Review Although both James Cagney movies have narrative limitations that prevent them from being ranked with the greatest Warner Bros. productions, their appeal as a double bill is substantial, with each providing an emotional payoff that is missing in its companion. George Raft stars with Cagney in the 1939 Each Dawn I Die. Set in a penitentiary, Cagney is a framed newspaper reporter who befriends Raft, an important gangster. Production Code stipulations prevent Raft from surviving, but the bond they establish is unusually well-defined and their performances are marvelous.
