Product Overview

This book compares changing landscapes in Myanmar from the Paleolithic and Neolithic through the rise of bronze-iron chiefdoms and the emergence of first millennium AD Hindu-Buddhist walled polities. Throughout this sequence, contrasts between the arid north and well-watered southern coasts framed complementary and changing roles, ones buttressed by links to Yunnan, Thailand and South Asia. These ecological differences are seen particularly in the different forms of the first millennium A.D. walled sites. The fortifications reflect not only the increased agricultural output and economic competition of this era but fluctuating local and long-distance patronage relationships. Archaeological exploration of Myanmar has principally focused on the north, an imbalance that this book attempts to rectify with data from the delta and peninsular regions. This balancing is equally vital in understanding related and subsequent transformations throughout the region.
