|Let Yourself Go
Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) is a modern woman on a quest to marvel at and travel the world while rediscovering and reconnecting with her true inner self in Eat Pray Love. At a crossroads after a divorce, Gilbert takes a year-long sabbatical from her job and steps uncharacteristically out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life. In her wondrous and exotic travels, she experiences the simple pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of love in Bali. Based on an inspiring true story, Eat Pray Love proves that there really is more than one way to let yourself go and see the world.

"All of the performances are knockouts, especially The Visitor's Richard Jenkins as a damaged Texas spiritualist who steeps the movie in intimacy.  Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
"Eat Pray Love works quite serviceably as a light comedy and a pleasing travelogue.  Stephanie Zacharek, Movieline.com

Editor's Note
A woman who once made it her goal in life to marry and rear a family finds her priorities suddenly shifting in Ryan Murphy and Jennifer Salt's adaptation of author Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir. In the eyes of many, Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) was a woman who had it all -- a loving husband, a great career, and a weekend home -- but sometimes one realizes too little too late that they haven't gotten what they truly wanted from life. On the heels of a painful divorce, the woman who had previously looked forward to a contented life of domestic bliss sets out to seek her true destiny by traveling first to Italy, where she learns to appreciate nourishment; then to India, where she discovers the power of prayer; and finally to Bali, where she unexpectedly finds the meaning of true love.

Professional Reviews

Los Angeles Times
3 stars out of 5 -- "[B]eautifully rendered....The movies creates space and a place for Roberts to give into wave after wave of feelings as she moves through resentment, guilt, regret, forgiveness, joy and hope to change her life." 08/13/2010

Box Office
3 stars out of 5 -- "EAT PRAY LOVE is a merging of diary and travelogue to explore, in romantic and glowy gestures, one woman's process of rebirt....A great comeback for Julia Roberts..." 08/12/2010

Movieline
"EAT PRAY LOVE has been made with some thought and care; the script, in particular, adapted by Murphy and Jennifer Salt, faithfully captures the easy-going rhythms and self-effacing good humor of Gilbert's prose." 08/13/2010

San Francisco Chronicle 7 of 10
Julia Roberts spends a lot of time meditating in Eat Pray Love, and at a certain point the movie replicates the effects of meditation within the audience. About two-thirds into the film - probably during one of the hundred or so times someone tells our heroine that she should open up to love - my mind shut off. When it switched back on a minute later, I didn't know the day or time, or where I was or what movie was onscreen. Eat Pray Love had induced a state of pure, undifferentiated being...This experience, unique in a lifetime of moviegoing, says something about the numbing quality of Eat Pray Love at its worst. It is 140 minutes long and repetitious beyond belief. Yet for all its weaknesses - unconscious contradictions, travelogue simplicity and mix-and-match spirituality - Eat Pray Love is, like its central character, on a genuine quest. It's about something important, the search for meaning and happiness, about finding one's inner life amid the clutter and confusion of modern existence...Eat Pray Love has three challenges it never completely overcomes. The first is that leaving Rome is never a good idea. The second is that much of the movie is about the spirit, but you can't make drama out of someone meditating. The third is that, for all its length and ambition, the film's spiritual insight is superficial. Liz's journey toward self-acceptance arguably borders on solipsism. Perhaps not accepting herself might have been a more enlightened first step...For all these reasons, the India section sags woefully. But then, things pick up in Bali, with the arrival of Javier Bardem, who's just more manly and elemental than Franco and Crudup, definitely more suited to Roberts, who looks like she could eat those other guys alive. "Pray" is rough going, ideal for a bathroom break or a soul-renewing trance. But "Eat" and "Love" are cinema friendly. - Mick LaSalle
