The bestselling novel featuring the "wonderfully epic hero" (People) who inspired the hit film Jack Reacher.|
Thumbing across the scorched west Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go, and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen?s got a story to tell, and it?s a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that?s pure Gothic. She?s also got a plan. Jack Reacher?s part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.|
Annotation:
Jack Reacher, taciturn hero extraordinaire, stumbles into more trouble when he hitches a ride in Texas with a beautiful woman. Her name is Carmine Greer, and she wants Jack to kill her rich, evil, abusive husband, Sloop. When Jack refuses to do the job, Carmine does it herself--or so she says. Sloop's definitely dead, but Jack has a hunch that that Carmine's lying about her guilt. But why? Between barroom brawls and other misadventures, Jack and a lawyer named Alice Aarons struggle to get to the truth.Jack Reacher, taciturn hero extraordinaire, stumbles into more trouble when he hitches a ride in Texas with a beautiful woman. Author Bio
Lee Child
Lee Child is the man behind Jack Reacher, a six-foot-five-inch drifter and ex-military policeman who has been featured in more than a dozen best-selling thrillers. Child, who stands the same height as the hero of his series, was born in Coventry, England, and raised in the nearby working-class city of Birmingham. He began his career as a producer with Granada, the television company responsible for such shows as THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN and BRIDESHEAD REVISITED. In 1995, when he was 40, he was laid off due to a corporate restructuring. He used his unexpected free time to write the first Reacher novel, KILLING FLOOR, which was published in 1997. The book, which won an Anthony Award for best debut of the year, proved exceptionally popular, and Child now has millions of avid fans. Child once said of his protagonist, "I look at the character as an update of a very old figure, who comes out of 1,000 years of literary tradition: the loner, the mysterious stranger, the knight errant who shows up, solves a problem and then leaves. He came out of Scandinavian sagas and English tales of knights and survived into the American West and pop lit." Explaining why Reacher's adventures take place in the U.S., Child, who is married to an American woman, has said, "The idea of writing against a huge landscape, a vast continent where anything could happen, greatly appealed to me."

Praise

New York Times Book Review
"[Child's] words are spare, but well chosen; the action is violent, but well calculated; and the ingenuity of the plot is especially well suited to a character like Reacher..." - Marilyn Stasio 07/22/2001

Baltimore Sun
"It's sordid and complicated. It's also a tightly constructed and colorful story." 06/03/2001
