Acclaimed bestselling author Jeffery Deaver takes listeners on a brand-new adventure: a race to find and stop a professional criminal whose gruesome specialty lies in extracting information from his innocent victims by any means necessary.

Washington, D.C. police detective Ryan Kessler is targeted by a "lifter"--a hired criminal who uses any "edge" he can to get information his mysterious boss desperately needs, including torture, murder, and kidnapping. The job of keeping Kessler and his family alive long enough to find the ultimate perp falls to a seasoned federal protection officer known only as Corte, a man with mysteries of his own and an uncompromising devotion to keeping those in his care alive. Corte and the lifter engage in a deadly contest as the story races to a surprise conclusion that not even the most seasoned Deaver fans can predict.

Henry Loving is a brutal killer, with a frightening intelligence to match his ruthlessness. Known for his techniques of information extraction, he is not a man to be messed with. So when it becomes clear that D.C. police officer Ryan Kessler is Loving's next target, the entire Kessler family is given protection. Corte is the man assigned to protect the Kesslers, but he has personal vendetta out on Loving. Will Corte be able to protect this innocent family and exact his revenge? This is an exciting thriller from best-seller Jeffrey Deaver.
Author Bio
Jeffery Deaver
Jeffery Wilds Deaver was born and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Missouri and received a law degree from Fordham University. A self-described "terrible attorney," Deaver quit the law in 1990 to pursue a full-time writing career based on his fascination with and love of suspense. "When I teach courses in writing," Deaver said in a interview, "I always tell my students to write what you enjoy reading and I have always been a big fan of the sort of book I write--the plot-driven commercial thriller." Deaver's modus operandi has proven lucrative since his first book was published in the early 1990s. Several of his books have achieved best-seller status and two--THE BONE COLLECTOR (1997) and A MAIDEN'S GRAVE (1995)--have been adapted for film. Deaver's sister, Julie Reece Deaver, is an author of young adult books.

"Deaver's first first-person narrator, Corte, is an exciting new weapon in the author's arsenal of memorable characters." 09/06/2010

"Readers of Deaver's fiendishly clever suspenders...won't be surprised by the nonstop deceptions, reversals, shocks and surprises, but this time they're even more varied than usual, and, given the characters; backgrounds, a lot more plausible. The result is his most successful thriller in years." (starred review) 10/01/2010

"The challenge is to figure out what the rules are in this brain-teaser of a thriller...." - Marilyn Stasio 11/07/2010
